AAMIM at the Brisbane Woodshow
OK as promised here's a collection of instruments on display in Brisbane.
I have completely mucked up here, because my carefully taken notes about who did what have gone AWOL, so if any member reads this thread and recognises someone's work, please let's know!
I have been a member for some years, and have been too slack/busy/far away to attend any meetings, but it's always great to have a yard at the show, and with a few people now living in the Sunny Coast area, there's a fair chance that we'll arrive at a workshop session en masse!
It's a bit noticable that membership seems to comprise err, people at least as old as I am, which is a great shame as the depth of experience in this mob has to be seen to be believed, and it's just there for the asking.
So if you have any interest in building or repairing instruments, spend the $40 on membership and get along to a meeting!
More info at http://www.aamim.org.au/ or send me a PM for Qld meeting details.
Cheers,
P
Some guitars: I'm sure given time I'll get the descriptions right!

Did I forget to mention that A A M I M is the acronym for the Australian Association of Musical Instrument Makers?
All instruments are equal in the eyes of the association (if not individual members! ) so when I get my act together tomorrow, I'll post a bunch of more diverse instruments!
cheers,
P

I really love the eclectic mix of talent and well, musical taste in this group. Perhaps some of these will inspire!
1) A fifteenth century rebec, the fore runner of the violin by Mike Tracey
2) An electric violin (with rebec in the background) to contrast the eras
3)Psaltery by Robert James - always good value, Robert has music sheets below the strings, so anyone can simply pluck the strings over the dots and become a musician.
4) More of Robert James' stuff, including a tongue drum (which he calls a "Funundrum"), the little tape recorder plays a recording of his Aoelian harp, an "instrument" that relies solely on wind blowing through it, for more info check out his website: http://users.tpg.com.au/rdjames/index.htm
5)A beaut marimba thingy. See I don't even know the name of the instrument, but it works!

Finally a harp of unknown parentage.
If all of the above doesn't contain an instrument to your taste, then you should join and fill the gap!
Maybe next year I'll have my busker organ there, who knows?
I hope some of these pics have been of some inspiration to someone!
Cheers,
P

Thanks alot for the posts Midge. You'll be happy to know I posted off my membership fees to the AAMIM last week. Will try and get along to one of the exhibitions sometime.

Thanks bitingmidge! Fantastic!! I'm not sure i recognise any of those makers, by the work anyway. Except Dave Guscot, I met him last year.
The on fire bass in the background looks interesting!
Thanks again for putting it up, seems like it extends the range of the exihbitions a little bit to put some of it on the web. And hopefully swell the numbers of the instrument makers assoc'

Thanks from me too- beautifully made instruments are inspiring to view. I'm new to this group, but I've been involved with the band saw boxes group for a long time. I've bought the instructions and hardware kit for making a lap harp. I'm not musically talented- though I'd like to be- but I've just wanted to make an instrument for a long time.
What was interesting to me about the last post was the photo of the harp that showed obviously laminated pieces for the frame. I have some walnut and purpleheart lumber handy and I could avoid having to order more wood if I made the harp using this wood.
Has anyone in this group made a harp? Lap harp? I can use any helpful information you would like to give.
Thanks, Donna Menke

Sebastiaan,
There are some superb craftsmen in AAMIM in NSW, but from what I gather they don't meet regularly, if at all, which is a pity for them and for the organisation.
It would only take a few people to kick off with an informal gathering, and I'm sure you'd have a regular crowd, then participation in the likes of the Sydney show.
In Brisbane (though I've never been ) meetings are held in the workshop of one of the members on the second Sunday of each month. As of next month, we'll be doing the same on the Sunshine Coast, the only way the organisation can grow is by getting involved, which in turn will give you greater exposure to all this stuff!
When you join, you'll have access to all the members details so it's not too hard to make contact!
Cheers,
P
