Now let me get this right. Youre sanding back the sides of an acoustic guitar so the side is flush with the binding?

Its normal to instal bindings so they sit proud of the side (and top or back) and then scrape them flush with side using a cabinet scraper. Far easier than having to work back an entire side.

If you do need to sand back the side of an instrument then some makers use a belt sander/linisher but you need to work VERY carefully or have one of your mates standing ready to catch the guitar body as it flies across the workshop. The technique is demonstarted on one of John Mayers guitar building DVD's.

Note that sanding a side presents the problem of dark coloured sanding dust disclouring light coloured bidnings. This is where a cabinet scraper is better for the job.
