Amp kit advice please
Hi everyone,
My 13yo picked up a couple of PA boxes off the side of the road yesterday. One of them works well. We had a conversation about amps and he thinks he wants to build one even though he rarely plays. Some of you will know how much I like loud electric music but hey its my boy we are talking about I have the electronics experience to put a kit together, what can you recommend. 30 watts max, two inputs, no fancy stuff, dollars are an issue for him.
Thx

i am assuming he wants to make a valve amp.
strung out recently bought a champ style kit from evatco, he may have some input.
i would probably reccomend that you make your max wattage about 15-20. i'd probably suggest a single ended design (a champ or princeton design) or a push pull amp with 2 6v6's or el84's.
what kind of music does he play? making an amp without a distortion channel would be best, as they get quite complicated, and you would probably want more power.

Hi Sebastiann,
As Black Labb said I picked up a 5 Watt champ kit from EVATCO.
I have just finished putting it together and for the price, I was pretty happy.
This was my first attempt at building a Tube amp and I found this fairly straight forward - although it is a simple circuit
There were a couple of resistors missing and a small mistake on the layout drawing but this was no big deal and they put them in the mail straight away.
Mal (Evatco) was really helpfull when I powered it up and had a self induced wiring problem... he was as keen to get it going as I was.
I would recommend them for a first time build.
Good luck
Greg

Hey Black Labb,
Hows things.
Yes just got it going today although it only took about 5-6 hours to put it together (between running around the country.)
I started "thinking" about the cabinet today and I reckon I am going to do what you suggested and build a seperate speaker cab, Just in case! I want to build another !!!)..
The amp seems to sound Ok but I only have the speaker sitting in a box at the moment....
You were right though - it could be addictive!
We' ll catch up soon .
Cheers
Greg

congrats on getting it done i will bet those first few notes were easy on the ear
from what i remember from aggh you have the jensen 8" alnico?? which is similar to what the original champs used
you wont get a big sound if its not mounted in a box
having it in a headshell is a 2 edge sword
the champ is an great grab and go amp in a combo with the 8" a grunty 10" or even hetter with a 12" - in a headshell though you can plug into whatever and a champ through a 4x10 or 4x12 is a really big sound
you can crank these little 6 watters at 100% and get that meltdown valve overdrive that so many pedals have tried to emulate - while doing so your ears are relatively safe and you are not peeling paint off walls
try cranking a 50 watt marshall to the sweet spot and see how your neighbours like it
be really interested to hear what you think of the tone - it would be good to try a few different speakers - speaker choice is big part of of setting up an ampray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'
