    Default aussie timber for neck?

Hi all))My first post here- but was reading posts for a few years already)
I`m starting my third build (bass), and this time I want to use aussie timbers only.
I did lots of reading and googling, and found out, neck timbers used here are mostly queensland maple and tasmanian blackwood- but they`re soundwise more on mahogany side, sort of Gibson sound...I`m looking for rock maple substitute, Fender-like sound..
Some guitar makers say, tasmanian murtle would be the closest timber to maple..
Is it OK to use for a neck? The bass is going to be 34 inch scale, four strings...Should I
put some carbon rodes in, or just a trussrode alone will be enough?
    Thanks)

i did a blackwood neck fo a 6 string, and that held up alright...

i was under the impression myrtle was soft

    Ps. check your spelling

I have used Tassie Oak and it is very warm and mahoganyish, I'm not sure what Aussie timber would give you a bright Fenderish tone. Maybe go to a timber yard and test the tap tone of varying timbers.

jarrah is similar density to rock maple

i reckon it would be similar tonewise as guitar neck

and i reckon truss rod is enough ...no need for additional artificial re-inforcement
    Looking for

Andrew_B sorry about my spelling, I`m originally from europe, moved here at 1991..))
I used blackwood for my second build on neck- maybe I did something wrong, but sound is a bit ...hmm..woody-muddy..not bright...I want to build a real slapper this time))

Rock maple is no go))This bass is going to be all aussie from top to the bottom)

R3R-I used jarrah for a top for my first build (Jazz bass)- it was beautiful( as a top)
But some people say, jarrah can be boomy, if used as a fretboard or neck..I`m really confused)))))And-jarrah is heavy.I don`t wont neck dive.

I have a nice piece of figured myrtle, I`d like to use in laminated neck with blackwood....
I heard, guys from Ethereal guitars use Tasmanian myrtle for necks..

I have to make my mind)Next monday I`m going to Anagote timbers to my friend Dave who works there, and we have to choose timber for my build))

    Hi Arncliffe,
Don't worry about your spelling Andrew B spelling, is bad most of the time.
Go ahead and build a neck with the Myrtle & Blackwood laminated you can not go wrong.
    Regards, Bob

...fwiw, i would expect the laminated neck (if properly constructed w.r.t. grain) to be the better solution for a bass guitar neck though i would be surprised if a jarrah neck would not suffice

i would be VERY surprised if a jarrah guitar neck exhibit tonal characteristics radically different from rock maple as the density is very similar

i am of the opinion where steel string guitars are concerned and no volume projection is required or desired from the guitar itself....that 'tone' is directly related to material density...

if you have no problems with weight of a rock maple neck, then i would doubt the jarrah neck would be anything radically different (this is w.r.t. 'neck dive issues')

having said all this ...there is no real way of finding out without actually making a jarrah guitar neck ...which i will come to do sometime this yr i reckon...
