What a fantastic piece of work, and a great looking instrument
What tools did you use for the carving on the top?
    How long for the build?

Looks like laquer from where I'm standing but I'll let Stu fill us in on the details.

Electrics are 250k pots. One volume and one tone. And 3 way toggle.
    Humbuckers are GFS FATPAFS.
I coated this in pre-cat nitrocellulose. Much fun was had with this.
And the top was carved with a flapdisc on a 100mm grinder. Then scrapers

    More pics to come, guys.

hey that she-oak fretboard looks fantastic. What a nice piece of wood!

(And I'm guessing, a bugger to work with ...)

I'm using blackwood for my laminated double bass neck. Not easy to work with but its coming up very nicely with the wide dark growth rings.

Are you considering entering it in GOTM over at Project Guitar?

Matthew- I'm a big fan of she-oak. I got the she-oak from Tim Spittle and the body blank from ALS. I found sheoak to be rock hard but rather prone to splintering around the fret slots. And the blackwood was also a little finnicky in spots. But no real crisis had arisen on this build, thankfully.
I definitely want to use more blackwood on necks and/or bodies in the future.

Dayvo- I'll enter it into GOTM, one I guess.

    Thanks for the feedback, guys.
Howdy Fiona. It was a pretty busy day at the open day at montsalvat last month !!!!

I'm now about to start building another electric or two, and while I
work my way through those, I'll be reading and re-reading my latest
arrival on the doorstep from ALS. Cumpiano's book.

Anyone can make an electric guitar, but to make an acoustic instrument with all of the variables to consider, definitely has me wanting to learn how to.

    cheers, Stu

After all the work in that amzing looking guitar I am surprised you didnt use more exotic pickups.

Thanks for the thumbs up !!! One back at you

I definitely understand what you're saying about the pickups.
Although, if this was a guitar that was to be sold, I would use a boutique pickup brand. Brand name pickups help the selling process, i'm sure.

The simple explanation is, in regards to my own personal use, and pickup functionality, I'm not swayed by name brands or the old adage the more you pay , the more you get. To a point.

Regardless of cost, if the pickup sounds good (to my ears) and matches the style of playing I do, then that is my benchmark.
If that pickup happens to cost very little, then to me, that's a bonus.

I have a friend who has started building his own guitars also, and between us we've been able to sample quite a few different brands of pickups. (forty years of playing between us and many pickups later)

So, in essence, as a guitar for my usage only, the GFS fatpafs well and truly fulfill everything I require from a pickup. Boutique branded or not.
( Mind you, I may change my mind at any time )

Foothills of the dandenongs, eh, oldpicker.
You could be my neighbour and I don't even know it

    cheers, Stu
