Do you have a good Drill Press?
A good forstner bit will probably do it. You may have to install a sacrificial wedge on it to get the bit registered thou...Cheers!Mongrel

LP truss adjusting thread size
Hey all, I trust every one is well.
Having done a bit of a search with out success I fingered I'd post the question.
Please don't yell at me Andrew , I couldn't handle the the stress. Anyway, I digress.
Can anyone tell me what size thread I need to cut for the LP truss adjusting nut, and how big does the nut cavity need to be to allow access for the adj tool? Is there a standard size or do I make that up as I go along?
I'm using a 5 mm steal rod for the truss.
regards to all

where are you getting the nut from and what type?
your better off getting the nut first and then figuring out the size.....
when i did my truss rod i couldnt read the bloody numbers on the dies!!!!!!!!
so i used the offcut to make sure the nut fit the thread i was cutting....
once i did that i did the truss rod
same with the adjustment wrench (if you decide to go with the wrench... otherwise the allen key)
get the tool then figure out the size you cant go wrong if you do it like that....

Fluffy wally, when will we see more progress on yours
Sorry Guys but I've been trying to juggle a few things at once and I've had some dilemmas with the neck , the sides weren't quite straight and one side was a tad wider than the other so I sanded it down on a flat block, it worked well but unfortunately I didn't sand with the fingerboard quite at 90 deg to the block so now I need to reshape the inside of the horn to match the neck, GRRRRR .
Also the neck tenon was siting too low in the pocket so I had to rout the tenon down and re laminate it. I must say that this is quite a learning curb for me.
Here are some pics.
regards to all

Truss rod hint
For those of you who want to make your own truss rods, good materials to use is those indoor metal cloths lines that people throw out during hard rubbish collection.
They already have a plastic outer coating, come in two sizes, 4 mm and 5 mm and you can make 12 rods from one rack.
Maybe we should start a hint and tip thread on the music forum

What are these?
Can some one tell me what these are for? They look like pin router bits maybe, a friend of mine gave me 5 or 6 boxes of these in different sizes.

is that?
They look way too long for detail bits,,,, to me.
I mean, my detail bits (the very few that I have) are as thin, but they have a blade edge square to the length, not a spiral blade.
Maybe you should take up dentistry?
or make really, really short flutes?
Dunno mate, but they look impressively important. Keep em on display in the workshop so your mates will be perplexed evermore.

They're drill bits for plunge drilling, not for routing.
That's all I've got.

Hi guys, Thinking of making your own pick up winder?
I was wondering if anyone's stumble across this nifty little program, it's the cheapest and most accurate winder counter I've come across.
All you need is an old serial cable, your computer and an input signal of your choice, read switch, proximity sensor, photo interrupt sensor what ever.
It should count at at least 30 Hz or better for fast winding, it also has a rev counter and a pick up winding calculator.
I've tested it and liked it so much I sent a donation for the software but you can download it for free.

I hope this is helpful to someone.

gday fluffy...
you disapeared for a while!
what are you up to on this build?
also, those small bits you posted up there ^
i found some of them when i was going through my grandpa's tools....
i think he said something about the reason the smaller bit is on a larger shank is so they dont flex as much when drilling steels
also, larger drill press's wont take the smaller bits in their chucks...
this counter thing sounds interesting....
i shall check out the link
i found a few ceiling fan speed control thingies in my grandpa's shed,
gotta see if i can hook them up to a motor to control its speed without zapping myself lol

I haven't done any work on my build for a couple of months due to illness , I had sinus surgery and I caught an infection ( most likely staff from the hospital ) and was living on like 12 horse tablet antibiotics a day, but now I'm better.
Tiny drill bits to fit in drill chucks hey, that makes sense and I've got dozens of them.
Maybe I should take Aussei's advice and take up dentistry LOL.

lol lazy wally....
whats the sinus surgery involve?
my cousin is getting something like that done in a week or 2....
shes scared lol....
lol nasal.... what a gross sounding word
and yea, the huge drill presses apparenntly have a 3-5mm or so gap when the chuck is fully tighted with no bit in it.... *shrugs*
only larger drill press iv ever used was when i was working at qantas and is had 6 spinning hole punch bits in it to drill the holes along the edg of books so they can be fitted into binders....
so many hours i spent punching holes on that machine....
so many times i read the "this machine can and will go straight through a hand or finger if the guard is up" sign.... ahh the good old days....
