    Default Nitrocellulose

Does anyone know where one can obtain nitrocellulose lacquer in Melbourne? I asked at my local paint shop and was told that its not made any more , I find this hard to believe.

Also I found a U tube link that suggests that it can be made by mixing ground up ping pong ball's with acetone any body tried it?

    regards

    Wal

G'day Wal. The only thing I've made from ping pong balls were smoke bombs.

If you're after old formula nitrocellulose, you'll find it a little harder to obtain.

Most builders using nitro are using the Precatalyzed nitro which is obtainable from good paint shops and Automotive paint suppliers.

I use Mirotone Mirocat which is available at many distributors.

(Mirolac is the older style nitro and it shows on the website but from my understanding this may no longer be available. )

I'm using the mirocat clear gloss 3220.
Medium thinners 1220 and ultra slow thinners 1242 for hotter days and superior flowout on the last few finish coats.

Here are some of the outlets you can get this from.

I've also used Wattyl stylwood precat nitro and have found Mirotone to be far superior
in every facet when it comes to musical instruments.

More info when you need it .

    Hi,
I've bought nitro in a rattlecan from carbling.com.au
Tricky to get a really pro looking job though. 2 cans should be enough for a guitar body - plenty of thin coats & sanding required! 1 more for a neck.
Make sure you specify the clear at the checkout (they do white & black as well).
Wear a proper mask & goggles when you spray!
Just about any other type of clear finish would be easier, but if you're patient give it a go!

Hi guys, sorry but I've been away doing maintenance work on the Ararat hotel and I had to finish off my sons work station desk.see pic.

Anyway, I've been making some progress on the LP neck, it's been mostly rough cut and I'll soon get stuck into the final shaping.

I picked this old spoke shave at an old stuff shop, it's in fairly good condition and it works.

Hi all I was wondering if anyone know if red gum is suitable for a fret board as it is quite hard and durable, or is fret boarding limited to a few select timbers.

    regards to all

    Default nitro paint

I use a nitro from sherwoods paints . Its called excellac 100 ,it only cost about $35 for 4 litres . They are situated near Broadmeadows. I have been using it for about 12 years now and its pretty good stuff and it wont crack or craze on you .

    Default Re nitro paint

Thanks for the tip Ralph I always appreciate good advice, I may need to get the name of the paint, But my question was in regards to fret board timber and if I could use red gum instead of ebony LOL.

What are the chances of coming around and having a look at some of your work?

    Kind regards

    Wal

Dont see why Redwood wouldnt work well. As a precaution Id choose a bit cut on the quarter. Mulga, Gidgee etc are regulaly used,
