First ever build
Hi Guys,
I've been a member on this forum for around 3 years and I've visited on and off.. I've always wanted to tackle my own build but the 2 things that have always stopped me is neck pockets and scale length..
long story short. I've finally decided to tackle my first build.. (body only)
I already have a jackson neck so I'm going to use that, but the question I have (for the moment) is, if I am going to use a TuneOmatic bridge I have to have an angled neck pocket yeah? How the hell do I do that?
thanks guys.

Check out Project Guitar
There are a couple of picture tutorials on how to
do this
Another alternative is Youtube
You would have to search the site to see if there is any info here

Thanks for the reply..
I have found instructions on how to make a jig however no one says how to create the 3 degree angle.. they just say "make it have a 3 degree angle"
I would do this.. but I dont know how to make sure the angle's right and I really dont want to stuff it up....

Use your trigonometry
Tan 3deg is .05240 so multiply this by the distance you are going and it will give you the rise you need.

Hi Josh
You'll need to make a router jig for your self so that you can use the router as a surface planer, then lay the body on a flat bit of timber that's bigger than the body, you can stick the body on with double sided tape and you can screw a couple of hinges on the back of the timber so that it wont move around. Now you can lift the front of the timber to the required angle and chock it with some scrap wood then screw it down.
Here's how I made mine. page 4 post 50.

Or do a web search for neck pocket jigs.

ok.. So finally I have started..
Firstly I'd like to state that I have no previous woodwork or handy man experience ever... I also had (until this week) never used a router and in fact had a fear of using powertools....
anyway....
I decided to recess my TOM instead of angling the neck for this build...
I built my templates and a big chunk of brazilian mahogany and then started hacking...
First I routed the neck pocket... it fits like a glove which is a surprise since I made the template for it by hand with metal files in 3mm MDF.. :S
I had to rough cut with a jigsaw because I'm too poor to own a bandsaw at this stage.. but I DEFINITELY want one soon.. the smallest one I can get since I have space restrictions.. any suggestions of a good one would be appreciated...
Then routed the body from my template....
used a drum sander drill bit attachment on my drill press to tidy up the shape and voilà! thats what I've ended up with so far...
Made a couple of small errors due to inexperience with powertools.. but luckily they're all in the body contour areas so they'll be carved out
Tomorrow I tackle the control, pickups and bridge cavities.. and maybe start on the contours if time permits..
