Default New Build - Les Paul Junior DC

    G'day Everyone,

I am part way thru a Les Paul Junior build, thought I'd share it with everyone.

Firstly., this is my first scratch build with a set neck , only ever built strat style bodies and necks before so go easy on me .

I bought the mahogany sight unseen from A.F.T - Freighted it up from Melbourne to Wollongong.. Was pretty dissapointed to see it was full of knots etc after it was dressed... Only paid $80 so I can't complain. I'll buy a proper blank from Gillets next time..

Looks like this guitar is gonna be a solid colour

Trying to avoid as many knots as possible on the outline.

Managed to cut the body out on my el cheapo GMC bandsaw

Had an "oh ####" moment routing the body - a section of soft wood just compressed when I ran the router bearing over it and took some major chunks out of the sides near the horn.. I dug all the sapwood out and filled it with bondo ..

Used a 3/16" rounderover bit on the sides

    Looking good David.

Did you make that neck tenon template your self? It looks pretty straight and well made.

Regards and all the best for the new year to all

I've given that bandsaw hell over the last 12 months - If it breaks down tomorrow, I can say I got my moneys worth out of it. It can cut a body out but you need to go slowly. I've broken a couple of blades so far, I am using a blade I got from Carbatec at the moment.

The neck blank is some Vic Ash , I glued a block on to allow me to bandsaw the neck angle in.

Borrowed a mates REAL bandsaw to cut the angle

Routed in the truss rod cavity - Never done it this way before but its SO easy. I won't be using my laminate trimmer anymore to do this.

I went to thin down the headstock thickness but took a few mill too many ! Went down to 13mm, needs to be about 14.5mm...Crap...

I will glue a veneer on the face to give me some thickness back. I thinbk they do this on the Les Pauls anyway

Attached the headstock template and routed away

Traced and band sawed a headstock veneer , 1.5mm thick. Gives me a headstock thickness of 14.5mm now

Veneer glued on and truss rod in and fretboard has been routed to size( its still attached to my template ) - fretboard is Cocobolo Rosewood from LMI )
