Might I hazard a guess that the braced back was left lying flat on a bench, with the braced side up and exposed, while we went through that sudden soggy Sydney spell recently?

I must admit that I am surprised that something as thin as that back could generate that much force, though.

Alastair you would be very wrong to think it was left lying flat on a bench I dont make those kind of mistakes more than once and I made it a long time ago. I always store machined and dimensioned parts and stock in a manner that allows for even airflow to all surfaces.

I agree that the thin back plate is not likely to exert that kind of force but the braces themselves could.

Humidity could have played a role in all this but only a small one!
