My First Build a Weissenborn
Hi tbkmagic, its only a two man conversation at the moment as I think the only interest here is for electric guitars.
I could be wrong, as for Andy he likes talking. as for proggress on my build, check the weather report for Tasmanian the past 4 months or more, all it has done is rain, so work wise this has put me behind in working orders and sorry to say work comes first.
but all going to plan I should be right to resaw my billets next week, so I will get there.
I will finish this build.
Cheers Bob

yeh you are right there andy i have seen this before to.
I'm pretty sure its if it is an acoustic one where as the make solid for lapsteel.
Cole Clark do one thats semi acoustic dont know if thats like bound and bent sides like an acoustic or weather they have chambered a solid body but its semi anyways, they call it a violap.
heres a pic of the top braced and bound before the back is glued on that i found.

Well my turn to pick your brains about the lapsteel bob!!
any i dea what scale length is sort the ballpark standard figure for a lappy?
I'm going to research it in a minute but i just thought you might have a good idea?
I have just been looking at your build thread here and then some pics of lappy's
and as the frets are only an indication i wonder weather you could make a bridge for adjustable scale length? i am a machinist and i reckon i can make it so i will have to see what info i can find.
Cheers Keegs.

My First Build a Weissenborn
Sorry tbkmagic, I still have a lot of research to do myself, so I dont know much still learning.
I have listened to some lapsteel youtube videos and I do love the instrument.
I have to go out now as I have about 7 ton of Myrtle and Houn pine to move its on its way to Queensland, do some research on lapsteel and lets us know how you go, and I will see what I can find out and keep you posted.
I ho, I ho its off to work I go.
Cheers Bob

Keegs,
Regarding scale length, what you need to consider is what you are going to tune to.
I have built two weissenborns
One is the standard 25" scale which i keep in D tuning ( like an E chord but down two semitones)
The other I built to 27" scale and tune it down to Open C
Traditional electric lapsteels commonly are about 22- 23" scale length but were normaly used in higher tunings such as C6 When you try to use them in say open D then you end up needing very large gauge strings.
If I were building an electric lapsteel to use in D or E I would be using 25"

Not much point in adjustable scale length.
The fretboard markers may only be an indication, but they are worthwhile

not much point in terms of sane people!
but in terms of hey you did that! thats interesting! ya crazy bastard!
i reckon if changing between 25" and 27" there may just be enough room to run 2 sets of frets down the neck. in fact there is, side by side.
I am only wondering aloud and then even still maybe i'll build it!
it'd be pretty interesting i reckon!
Hi tbkmagic, & Andy, with my Weissenborn Acoustic, the finish size of top is about 31 inch long and 15 inch wide at the widest point, sides 39.5 inch long and 3 inch wide.
Standard lapsteel scale length is 25 inch, are you going to do a lapsteel build.?
Regards Bob
Bob i may do a lappy as my second build but just for something different for this forum i'm gonna build an electric first, oh wait thats not that different.
but yeh i reckon second will be this lappy and i may throw in the adjustable scale length just to see

My First Build a Weissenborn
Very interesting idea tbkmagic, Magic idea.
This is something I would be very interested in seeing, new idea, call them mad what ever, I am one who believes in trying out new designs and new ways to do builds.
So bugger the basic electric guitar, lets see you start the electic lapsteel first.
And I am sure if you listened to some youtube lapsteel music clips.
You will know what I am talking about.
And if you want magic timber ask for Bob.
Cheers Bob
