This one just doesnt seem as "happy"
Thats ok, use the maple you were going to send me,,, ill just have to use the mahogany, ebony, metal toggle switch, bone nut and a few other things I was going to trade with you

Thats ok, i'd rather see the willing apply themselves to think and be creative, than have the unwilling bust a vessle just trying to think laterally.
If youve been making guitars for 20 years then you'd know that building an acoustic entails a bit more work than knocking together a solid body. Im not interested in your challenge for one perfectly valid reason - Its physically impossible for me to build an acoustic in 2 months while working at my day job and taking care of other things that go on in my life.

Your insinuations that those who dont wish to take part in your challenge are doing so because theyre not willing to apply themselves or think laterally is not really appreciated. You sound like a kid spitting the dummy because the other kids dont want and come and play with you in the sandpit.

"knocking together" a solid body? I pay just as much attention to the tone, quality and production in my soild bodies as I would with any acoustic. As im sure ANY other solid body builder does.
I also try to apply something new in EVERY guitar I make,,, not just follow the same plan every time. As i would hope EVERY other luthier does.
Thats also why I've tried to alot a time limit,,, to try and get people to try new things, but you still dont seem to get that. You do like to have a winge though.
Obviously an acoustic takes more time, any idiot can understand that,,, as you have well established!
Your not interested because you didnt read what I said. Its not about completing any guitar to strung and done stage,,, its about trying to work within a limit. Doesnt really mater if you dont finish in that time, so long as you try new things,,, hellooooo!
Then we have peple working away at things they might never have tried before, and they will continue to post their good work until they are done,,,, no matter how long it takes.
My insinuations? Grow the hell up! Any intelligent person can make their own mind up of what they choose to do. If a few light hearted and well intended jibes get your knickers in a twist, then PI55 OFF.

Default Its not a race, its an unguided tour

To everyone else who would like to give it a go, please do it because you want to have some fun. Not to bitch about whats not possible, why you can't do it or "are we there yet".
Try giving it a go and tell us what you have made possible, how you have been able to do it and,,, when you get there, just let us know.
If you cant participate, thats cool. Keep watching cause you might see a neat idea or two from those who can get involved in this. You might not also,, but where there's hope, there's life.

Yes Kiwigeo, i do try to participate, thanks for noticing.
Oh im not big on track records because no one truely knows what they can achieve untill they have to TRY.

(Honest candour) A friend recently told me that you are actually a really nice guy, but youve not been yourself lately,,,, and i dont doubt that at all. We all go through some really crap times, and i do honestly wish you the absolute best. The world can do without yet more hate.
I do reply with a bit of attitude when I get attitude, but im really just playing. Please dont take me too seriously. Ill let you know when im honestly off.

You'll notice that in the interest of harmony on the forum I deleted that last post.

As for not being myself of late......its probably something to do with the fact its 2.45am in the morning and Im working graveyard shift on an oil rig off the coast of WA.

I wish you luck with the challenge but like I said I dont have a hope in hell of being able to participate.

I too have been busy, therefore have not been able to post again or watch this thread till now. It has slightly annoyed me that this thread has got to the point that it did, the instrument thread has always been such a friendly place to post till now.

Anyway.. an idea I had going through my mind was that we should have some judges in the challenge....
My suggested judges would be Kiwi, Rhoads, Old picker, and that guy from bluestone guitars (tradie???), and also contrebasse (if we can find him).
These guys have been on the forums for alot longer than myself, and have all at one time or another proven beyond a doubt that they have some valuable opinions/ skills in the art of making stringed instruments. It would feel alot more confident knowing that these guys, who probably will not take part due to being busy/ unable/ to fussy, will be impartial judges to the challenge.

As for the challenge, we should define the criteria.

    1. innovation
    2. origionality
    3. construction
    4. finish
    5. practicality
    6. Time limit -2 Months
    7. Stringed instrument
    8. contruction method/ materials- open

We should also work out who will participate by registering on this thread.

    I am in...
If you dont play it, it's not an instrument!

Fortunately Bricks there is plenty of precedent on these forums.

The woodturners do this kind of thing regularly. see https://www.woodworkforums.com/f8/cf-bowl-challenge-judging-no1-92834 What it needs is someone to assign the entrants finished piccies anonymous numbers and then create a poll thread. Winner is chosen by number of votes. Simple. Lets the "gurus" play as well!

I dont think we should limit it to stringed instruments, I suggest open slather as long as you can play "Smoke on the Water" or some variant thereof on it.

Im willing to run the comp, its not a big deal to raise a couple of threads.

see this is how it should be....

    fun and inviting.....

i understand people live in the real world and have jobs and time restrictions,
so any comp that is run has to acknowledge that...

i also understand that a comp can die out and get boring if it is run too long....

i like the criteria idea..... takes me back to highschool wood work class

    lol

Im a bad choice as a judge mate. If youre going to have panel of judges then AussieOzBorn should be on same...the project is his baby. IMHO a vote amongst forumites would be the way to go though.

The Bluestone Guitars guy is Stu and Matthew can be found over on the ANZLF forum..hes one of the moderators over there.

Thank you Kiwi for directing the thread back to me. Id like to think that if a made the beastie, I can also guide its future,,, so thats appreciated, thanks

As for the judging,,,,, I think every guitar made, or even the attempt, is a real winner.
Lets face it, we do get very much baised to our own good work. All that effort and the little ideas that make up the whole thing, some people just cant see the finer details of our dedication.
I'd say lets just do it and see if anyone REALLY likes someone elses work enough to say "WOW, i gotta do that next time"! That to me would be a sign of a winner.
And im sure there will be points on every guitar that we will all say that.
Have fun, or die trying! Ok so dont die trying, just dont let splinters or a busted thumb stop you!
