changing fingerboards
i plan on making a bass (after my eletric is finished)
but im looking for ideas to make a interchangeable finger board, so i could switch between fretted, fret-less, and half n' half. any advice would help from anyone, is was thinking a nut or something but it also has to be sturdy and cant interfere with the truss rod, please and thanks!

the sollution is easy....
build two bass's, one fretted, one fretless....
or alternatively, build a double neck....
an interchangable fretboard would never work, you would have to give it a full setup and adjustment each time it was swapped over.... not practical.... ugly.... its been brought up on every guitar forum im a member of....

hmm, your right. what if i found a way to keep the truss rod in place, if i figured a way to do that then i wouldnt have to re-adjust the neck, correct?

The fretboard is an important factor in the strength and stiffness of the neck, Having it removable would leave you with a vey weak neck.

Another question what if i made the neck thicker by adding a board under where the interchangeable board would be, it would in theory keep the truss rod in place therefor letting a interchangeable board allowed

Yeah Dude, Go with what Andy B is saying. What your proposing is an awesome idea, but if it were genuinely practical, we would probably have seen it by now from one of the major Brands. . . .maybe an all metal build, removing any stress or strength required/sustained from the fretboard? extremely major and expensive design and build process though, not to mention the tone differences. . . .I could go on all night!.
I reckon this will be an interesting thread!

The biggest problem with that idea is that a fretless has a very different kind of action (on a good instrument) to that of a fretted, so having interchangable fingerboards would be incredibly impractical for making a comfortable and easily played setup. And as said above, the strength factor is quite a big issue
