    G'day Dan,

I'd love to see a photo of the mod you did to your winder to slow it down if possible - We may have the same winder ? ( mines linked at the top of this forum )

    Cheers

    Fletch

LOL, hey to you too Dan, my workshop is the same . Yep, I lurk around the pickup makers forum (seen you there too), ozbass and a few others (the usual for bass makers). Very nice work on your basses BTW.

G'day Dan. Impressive work there mate. In terms of pics, some of us like to document our builds as a thread, just to share our work with each other. If you have any builds in progress, then feel free to post progress pics or pics of finished products.

I look forward to seeing more of your work,

    Cheers,

    Peter

    Not to worry, it'll pass

But seriously, a simple winder is not that difficult to make. You can make them from many things, for example

    - stick a bobbin on a sewing machine thingy, sew and wind in parallel
    - setup a drill press or just a variable speed hand drill
    - make one from parts (motor, pulleys, etc)
    - modify a small lathe (crickey, if I had one I'd use it to make things!)

    Too many options.

I think that machine mentioned in this thread looks good. With a little programming, you can pretty much fix the speed issues......

    Thanks for the warm welcome!

Fletch, we have winders made by the same factory. I've left my camera switched on so the battery is flat but all it has is a new pulley from smallparts.com.au and a flat disc mounted on the other side. I've got some 1/4" phenolic here that will make a nice new disc, too bad it's such a bit killer to machine

Mine is this type - http://cgi.ebay.com/Coil-audio-Outpu...#ht_811wt_1166

but I just found this winder which I've not seen listed before, it looks ideal TBH, providing it's true variable speed - http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Programmable-...ht_3546wt_1166

I also saw that same type but with 2 speeds rather than variable speeds and the listing said the speeds could be customised to suit the buyer. I'm sure I found the manufacturer's site at some point so I'm going to enquire about buying a new controller chip for mine (if I can find them again). The great thing about the one I have it that is stops exactly at the programmed turn count. I can push 2000rpm on it but not immediately, it takes a bit to get a feel for how the coil is building. I think 1500rpm would be a good top speed. With a good tensioning device and traverse control I'm not sure what's possible.

I'm pushed for time working 2 jobs so I generally prefer to buy things like this and tweak them if necessary instead of spending the time making them from scratch. If I had approached it as a DIY project I would have gone overboard and tried a CNC traverse and it never would have gotten finished

Peter, I don't generally take many progress pics for a few reasons. The main ones being that my photography sucks, it takes up quite a bit of time and also because it then becomes expected of you. Apart from that I'm just not much of a photo kind of person I suppose. Here's one for Andrew though And yes, I'm happy to deliver if you're happy to pay

Hey Fletch, I just had a thought, dangerous I know but hear me out. I'm not sure but if that foot peddle is anything like a sewing machine it'll be increment le not lineal.

I don't know how you are with electronics, but if you could add an inline 400 watt Clipsal dimmer switch in series to the motor and still use the foot switch you'd achieve a fully lineal adjustment of the motor speed to the point of actually stopping it. You may even be able to fit it in the winder if there's room. I've tried this switch on a sewing machine motor and it worked flawlessly.

    switch size is 20mm x 20mm x 40mm

I'm not sure how much they cost but I reckon it'd be worth it. Hope this helps.

    regards

    Wal

Hey Dan, sorry about the interregation, but where do you source your individual bridge pieces from for your multiscales from?

    Cheers,

    Peter
