Thanks guys for the kind feedback.
ES335, I go for string ferrules over stop bars on nearly all of my builds for several reasons:
1) I mentally like the concept of the strings passing through the body, then the top before hitting the bridge and nut and creating tone. String Thru marketers have always screamed more Sustain, and that I am not convinced of, but there certainly is heaps .
2) The Stop Bar would have blocked a tad more of the view of the beautiful Blackwood top......so less hardware more timber.
3) To me, string thru looks a bit more CUSTOM and less like a Les Paul inspired something....
4) Price is not a factor for me and really unless you are producing hundreds of them where profit margins are really squeezed, the $10 - $20 odd difference is irrelevant
5) String Thru allows a bit of creativity in how you choose to align the ferrules.....stop bar goes on one way only
6) Marginally less weight.....not a big factor though.
7) Finally, I love the simplicity of the ferrules.......,all we need to do is attach the strings to the body somehow and it doesn't get much simpler than to drill a hole, fit some bushings and put the strings in. The simpler the device the more reliable it tends to be for longer......
Thanks again folks, still haven't taken more pics yet (sorry busy week) but will get some more up over the weekend.
Jon
PS: Did anyone spot the Orange AD30 head reflecting off the top in the second pic? Haha.....I was wrapped with that \m/Last edited by EtherealGuitars; 20th May 2010 at 10:09 AM. Reason: I can't count ha!

Thanks for the reply Jon, I appreciate you taking time to explain. Does make a lot of sense. I liked the way they look on your build and was curious if there were advantages using ferules instead of a stop bar. Certainly a lot of pluses in using them.
thanks again

Hey Jon,
Ripper build. That has come up great. Would not have picked that finish came out of a can! How many coats did you need, and how much leveling did you need to do at the end before buffing?
My wife has bought me the orange AD30 head for my birthday! Only 7 sleeps to go!
Cheers,
Peter

Caught up with Jon and saw this build last Thursday.
What a crackin' build.
The Brierley pups (Alnico5 in the bridge and A2 Neck) sound balanced and accentuate the strings during chordal work. Not a great deal of compression which I find extremely sought after in a pickup for more accentuation with pick attack. (I'm not a big fan of Actives......)
The finish has also come up a real treat, and of course the colours that bounce off the blackwood top don't show in the photos. There are alot more reds and orange hues in with the browns you see in the pics, and a great deal more flame.
It's always great seeing a build in person after seeing the pics. Sometimes the real thing doesn't hold up, in this case it's the pics that don't give the complete picture. Great job, Jon.

Hahaha! Love the Homer drool Wal .
Thanks also Peter and Stu, much appreciated lads!
It's funnny Peter, Stu also asked me the other night how many cans/coats etc and I honestly did not keep count. I think I said 2 the other night but on reflection I reckon it must have been 3 cans. I rubbed it back flat with 320 grit about 4 times all up before final 2 light coats. I then rubbed back with 1800 Micromesh and some hot soapy water, then 2400, 3200, 3600 and I quit at 4000. I then buffed with a drill and 2 separate buffing pads for 2 buffing compunds, the first has a bit of grit that buffs out as you work it, this builds the shine, and then a final buff with another compund that has no grit and pretty much brings out the final shine.
The key to getting a good result with this stuff is definitely in the work, not the can. I find convenience in the can and results from the labour.
BTW, I buffed out the CC cover after 24 hours of drying.....no problem at all....rest of build sat about 7-8 days I suppose before I started the rub out process.
Getting an AD30? Awesome . Really cool expressive vintage sounding valve amp.....I love it. Channel 1 is fantastic for Cleans and for running effects and Channel 2 gets dirtier so I use it as a gain channel. I saw one of my favourite bands CLUTCH earlier this year in Melbourne and they had an Orange Rocker 50w head on stage and the tones were sublime..............love the Orange amps . What cab are you going to run it to? I first ran it to a 2x12 Celestion GT75 150 watt cab and it got a bit lost....cab was just too big for it. I now run it through a different 2x12 with a Celestion V30 (60 watt) and a Celestion G12H Anniversary edition (30 watt)....still 90 watts of speaker room but the amp pushes this a heap better than the big one. The vintage designed speakers to me sound heaps better too....much more musical, they really ring out! Definitely report back to us on your thoughts and findings with the AD30 Peter.
Bob's Blackwood is definitely top rate, the best stuff I have ever used and what a pleasure to bring to life.

Fantastic build! The warlock style was the first guitar I drooled over and it's cool that someone is still inspired by them. Nice job and thanks for sharing.
I really have enjoyed seeing this unfold.
Cheers
