DarkFiend's LP Build (cont'd)
well well well looks as though nothing has changed around here well its 11 months since ive been on here and im deciding to return to my build of my les paul, and as i am starting this i have a few quick questions, i am going to order my neck and route out the cavity for it in the body but lately have been wondering if i need to make the carve top for it since i know that is adding thickness to the guitar, same question for the pup cavities
but aside from that i am back and i am continuing my build of my les paultools?: check

Howyagoin Darkfeind,
I am attempting a carved top on my first build. I routed all cavities and installed all hardware before the carve otherwise you may have stability problems while routing and drilling.

I agree with James, do all you drilling and cavities first before you cave the top out, and I'd recommend carving your pick up cavities at the same angle as the neck so that they sit parallel to the strings. It's much more tidy that way.
Though I may stand corrected as I've been known to be wrong from tome to time.
BTW let me know if you need LP carve templates as I have them on PDF at full scale.
regards

getting those templates would be a HUGE help and i still need to get my neck and hardware, since im not 18 i dont have a debit card to buy the supplies i need and my parents wont chip out $300+ USD even i pay them back so all this may have to wait until the beginning of next month when i am actually able to get everything. but thanks for the tips guys y'all are great

G'day Darkfiend,
I ordered templates and then realised it was going to take 12 - 16 weeks to get them so I made my own using a PDF file I found on the web. I printed it at a print shop (the ones that print builders plans) and then drew it onto 25mm or 1/4 inch perspex. After cutting out the template you have a more durable template than the ones you get online. Don't loose hope, overcome and adapt. I can honestly tell you that the first few steps are difficult to take but the rewards are great.
Cheers,
James

G'day Darkfiend,
Age is also the only thing holding me back - but from the other end. I wish I was a younger man so I could have learned basic woodworking skills earlier in life. Even if your first build is not as professional as you want (like my first effort - Red Special, Kinda) you will get better with time. You should take the advice I didn't and build your first guitar out of pine or the local equivalent of the cheapest solid wood you can find to learn basic skills - this is the biggest hurdle in my experience, that and the scare factor every time you use a new tool. I also once read "You should not attempt to build a guitar without being able to plan all steps required." - this advice I ignored when I started, once again, the result being I spent alot of money on a mediocre result when I could have learnt skills on cheap material.
Cheers mate,
James

im actually already started on this build i have the body cut out and have the control cavities routed out, its solid african mahogony (cheap? no) and im actually in a high school class devoted to woodworking so i dont have a shortage on tools so im pretty experienced in woodwork just not instrument work. and im not too worried on money i have pretty deep pockets since i saved a lot of money just for this build, right now its sittnig at about $325 for the entire thing and thats not skimping on quality electronics. and even is it turns out not so great, if i decide to build another i can salvage from my original which im hoping i wont need to do. and even though i may not have everything planned on paper i do have it in my head, improvise if needed (not recommended)

i think its time for me to update my build, although i dont have any pictures but i have everything i need as far as i know
just today i glued the top that will be carved onto my body and burned my name into the headstock, the next step i believe will be getting the top flush with the edges and then routing where the neck will go, although i have no idea how to install the neck itself wondering if anyone here could help me with that. the neck is made as a replacement neck for a les paul but that doesnt help me a whole lot. after that its routing the pup cavities and drilling the holes for my potentiometers and switch. the hardest part though i think will be getting the bridge lined up precisely where it needs to be
i wish i had pictures the top is really nice ash with padouk accentstools?: check
