    That's coming together nicely, Peter.

What's the true colour of the stained top ? The colours look out on the pix and make it look pink.
    Is it actually pink ?

Are you using water-borne with this one like the last one?

    Thanks,

I am planning on using the color tone WB lacquer over blond shelac. The shelac gives it a nice warm tone and extra pop in the grain, which is necessary I think for WB. The colour is Cherry red, and the photos aren't true of the actual colour, it is more like fire engine red than pink. I expect it to go darker again once the finish is layed on.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Interesting Peter, I have something similar on the shelf at the moment, Will drop a pic in when I can. I do like a bit of colour in a electric.

This pic is a good indication of true colour, at least it is on my screen. The neck to go with this has a purple heart skunk stripe as well as a combo of purple heart and some selected purple paua shell in the fret board and headstock. Hmmm the pic might even be a little less bright that the body now that I'm looking over my shoulder at it. By the way, like the last electric i posted this is a Fender style too but a Bullet basically minus a bit off the horns.

Also like Peter's it has no finish yet.

Nice work Toejam. Nice touch with the subtle burst. What timber is the body?

Hi Peter and Toejam nice stain jobs, I'm wondering what type of stain you are using and where would i be able to buy it from as i am wanting to acheive the same type of finish on my first build, any info would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Rob

Peter it's a rock maple 8mm top from Perry Ormsby( good value, like, buy a few get one free or something like that) and tassie oak back (chambered) that has been in the air up here for about 5 years.

Rob, the colour is Aniline dye and you can bye it from http://www.thewoodworks.com.au/site/ they say it mixes with alcohol but I use water, Hot is best to dissolve it. It is not expensive and 50gms goes a long way on wood, You can do two colour bursts or three. Mine is a subtle burst but you can make it much stronger if you like or even fade colour to plain wood.

Also mine is dyed dark blue first to highlight the grain then sanded back before applying the burst.

The stain I used is colour tone concentrate stain "cherry red" mixed with metho. I prefer it to water as it penetrates the wood better, and gives tonal contrast in colour with the grain. I didn't use a dark understain as it turned the red to burgandy and lost that fire engine red colour. Instead I applied two coats and sanded lightly between coats to give it a bit more grain contrast.

Here's another build I have commenced recently.

The neck is a laminated Rock maple neck with Wenge Veneer.

The fretboard is striped ebony - slotted to a 25.5 inch scale

And the body is quarter sawn zebrawood. Pic is gluing up the body blank. I must admit that I have had that brilliant piece of zebrawood sitting around for a while now and I have been itching to use it and couldn't resist the urge to make a body out of it.

More on this one to come

    Cheers,

    Peter

That colortone may just be aniline dye Peter and you can do aniline with metho if you prefer it that way. The reason I say that is because I recently was in contact with target coating and they hinted the Colortone water based finish used to be their USL and now it is their EM6000. Stewy mac denied it though and said target formulated it espesially for them. The reason target mentioned it was cause they were in discussions with USPS about useing them instead of UPS to ship to Aussie as they currently use UPS who are expensive, so the guy there said if your in a hurry you could get colortone from stewy and i quote, he added "(wink nudge)".

Also does the metho really penetrate the wood better? I was shown how to dye wood with aniline dye bye a retired french polisher and he seemed to think water was better, perhaps I should experiment with metho. He also mention the anline dye is the clearest but he was very old school so maybe there is better new products, Jeez so much to know.

I'm not sure necessarily that metho penetrates the wood better, but when i compared it to water, the metho highlighted the figure better (in this case). The water however applied more evenly, so if I was using a darker colour and sanding back to highlight the grain, I would probably use water. Horses for courses I guess. Thats why a test piece is a necessity. To trial until you are happy.

Ok, I agree with the choice of horse Peter. Perhaps I should experiment more as I do get a bit stuck in my ways.

    Hi all

Have done some work on the neck for the zebrawood build.

Glued the headstock faceplate on, routed and drilled holes fore tuners
