Our silicone pad was surplus from a lab and we used a reostat which was capable of handling the wattage to control the temp. all up it only cost a few bucks..... the most expensive thing was the peice of aluminium ( or aluminum as the yanks call it, yes they do spell it differently its not just their accent) and even that came from a garage sale.

home-made bending iron
I built a violin and bent the side bouts using a piece of water pipe held in a vice and heated it with a blow torch - re-heating for each bend, rather than continuously applying it through the middle. Worked a treat. I quickly found though that I needed a metal back-strap to prevent the wood splitting on the outside, and for that I just cut open a tin can, opened it up and riveted a couple of handles to it. cost - just the gas for the blow torch and a few bucks for the pipe.

If youre using light bulbs as your heat source you MUST use a ceramic socket. A plastic socket will melt. Check out Herpatology supply shops for ceramic light fittings.
