What would be the best wood for making a set of african style drums. I need 3 sizes of hollowed out cylinders. Can make them O.K. but don't know which wood will give the best sound.

Well I've made some stave style out of meranti and out of brushbox. I had a friend in the USA who made some out of western red cedar for light weight.
I dont think it makes a huge difference to the sound either way.
But the best ones I made were from 20 and 60 litre oil drums, very resonant and a lot lighter and very "modern african"

Scally has posted on drums here Jeff, contact him, he is up your way.
Acoustically the biggest factors are dimensions and the skin. The shell absorbs very little of the energy in a drum."We must never become callous. When we experience the conflicts ever more deeply we are living in truth. The quiet conscience is an invention of the devil." - Albert Schweizer
