If you want a lighter coloured back wood, go for something like QLD Maple which is about the same density as Mahogany. Rock maple will give you a very heavy body, and that is the reason it is almost never used as the main body wood.

Hey Arran,This plan for the LP looks a little odd to me.......is that neck pickup position accurate? and the cavity for the volume/tone controls.....??? mmm where did this plan come from?

Yea dude that plan is off man, maybe use it for the body shape (that looks ok) but i would look twice before routing out and pups or control cavities.......

    have a look @

    and

you will see what peeps are talking about when they say that your pups location and your control cavity is a tad off

BUT in saying that - hell yea you have started! yewwwwww let the fun begin

The current Les Paul double cutaway is actually a 24 fret neck design so the pickup will be closer to the bridge than a standard.
Likewise it does have only one tone and volume knob,, forward shifted compared to a standard so that control cavity MAY be correct but I would double check anything from that particular seller

    Arran,

Not wanting to rain on your parade but watch you dont get carried away documenting your build and end up running out of time to finish the project. Take pics as you go but maybe document the build here on the forum once the project is finished.

I'm sure you've got it all under control.

    Cheers Martin

dont worry not really getting carried away, just took a few snaps when packing up in woodwork class, cut out the outline today, still looking for a cap or might just use the maple i have at the moment as a cap (sand it down) and get some mahogany for body, dont really know, any thoughts anyone?

Don't take on too much all at once, you'll over load........sort out the build first....then think about the pups, then later....when you have almost got that done, think about the stain a bit more...!!!!

Boy this thread went wild for a while there, I missed all that talk from the metal guru...!!! I wish I had kept up with the thread now, soon as he started talking about Line6 "cause all the metal players use those."....I would have said....put your Line6/Pod...and whatever up against this....."Metal sound...?? I'll give you Metal sound"

yeh that guy can worship what he wants, just DONT force it on other people. i may be only 16 goin on 17 but ive got a select range of pedals and amps i will use, im all about tube and vintage/old school effects, that guy can take his line 6 and shove it.

and btw thanks for the advice, i think i might of got a bit carried away with the stain/finish than actually finishing the build haha
