Hey arran,
hope this build goes well.
Re; bolt-on necks. My 1 build (plus 2 underway that have had a quick test set-up), have bolt-ons & have great sustain. Over the 30 years or so that I've played guitars I've seen more consistency from bolt-ons than set necks. The worst set necks have definitely been worse than the worst bolt-ons IMHO.
Re; pickups. I'm currently playing guitars with both Duncans & Brierleys. Each good in their own ways but I would go with brierleys as they would probably be cheaper unless the dollar approaches parity in a hurry. He will wind to spec to try to achieve the sounds you are after.
Cheers
PJ
PS; that hijacker was pretty full on! Pretty sure he was a bloke who has been banned from other forums I've looked at. Very entertaining but frustrating at the same time.LOL!

And i didnt get a chance to defend myself, haha, wont get much of a bite out of me anyway.
As for pickups Arran, go for something youve heard and like, stabbing in the dark can end in disappointment having to sell them for the one you should have bought.

Hey Arran,
Now that the cyclone has passed....
I have used duncans in most of the axes I play and have found them to be my fav. My favourite is the SH11 - Custom Custom. It has pleanty of heat. It is not quite has hot as the JB and it has a A2 magnet instead of an A5 in the JB which I find to give it a fuller tone on the overdrive (personal prefference)
SD's are pricey, but very nice pickups, and I doubt you will be anything but impressed with the tone.
In terms of the bolt on... If it is done well, you will get excellent tone and sustain, so I would not view it as second rate.. just different.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Arran,
I agree with most here in that SD's are good pups, but there are quite a few different
ones and parting with your hard-earned cash on something you don't quite know how will turn out can be daunting for builders (especially part-time ones like me).
My advice to you is to use whatever resources you can find. SD has their online tone wizard, you can even email SD with your build type and get a proper response. It is difficult to know what your guitar will sound like before it is completed, there are just so many factors.
I build around one guitar a year, and when you have all parts in hand before you start, you can get quite apprehensive about how it will all sound when its finally done. What I think is the best you can do is have an idea about what type of sound you are after. You discussed this a few pages ago. When you know what you're after at least you've got some direction to head towards. Find out what pups are used by the players you like, their guitars played (timber types etc). This might not get you the exact same sound but if you have a direction, you have a chance.
There are members here who build heaps more than I do, that may have a tried and true combination that they can reproduce and that's great for them, mainly because they are selling these builds, so they need that reliability. Asking these guys on the forum should get you good advice.

Hey Mate, My old man is a Fender dude (Guitar Player), I understand the difference!! but we have had great success and satisfaction with Kinman Pickups, Aussie made (again, please remember, I personally am a Bass Player, not Guitar) I don't know if he has the same effect with Gibson style pickups (yes, he does them all), but for your relatively custom requirement maybe he's worth talking too?
Remember, questions are free, and the only silly question, is the one you didn't ask!
Best Of luck

You aren't really going to use rock maple for the body and then cap it with something are you-----boat anchor.
You want the maple as a cap and a lighter wood for the back
