    Default gibson double cutaway

hey hey, im new to the forum so i really need help.
for my high school woodwork project we can make anything we want (or how much we want to spend) and i really want to make a guitar. i have about 12 weeks to do it which is 4 one hour classes each week so with the proper planning im hopeing ill be able to pull it off.

any way the guitar im interested in making is a gibson les paul double cutaway (fairly rare), if anyone is familiar with the band COG you'll know that it is one of Flynn's main guitars, ive attached a few pics of his guitar to get an idea of what i want (last one is probs best).

what i really need to know is where to start. is there any websites that have design plans or anything because i really suck at drawing , i have seen a few web pages to buy wood from and electronics and what not as well as some tutorials, but i would really appreciate some help as i really dont know what im doing.

i will greatly value any advice given (good or bad),
    thanks, Arran

Yep, that book is great, Arran, and welcome to the forum. There is a cheap but reasonable source of parts at Home.

If you want to clone that guitar exactly, other than the stupid stickers then fair enough, but there is are quite a few decisions to make in any case.

When I started out building my 2, I read through the first 25 or so pages of posts here; there's an amazing amount of good information, and even a lot of the stuff that had no immediate relevance to me has been filed away for a rainy day when I encounter something similar.

    Good luck, and ask questions.

So you've got 48 hours to build this guitar. Like you say it's going to require some very good planning. I'd be doing a detailed written plan for each session with time allocated to tasks etc. Id also be thinking of what could go wrong or not to plan and have contingency plans in place for same.

If you were attempting an acoustic I'd be having serious reservations....I take around 200 hours to build a basic acoustic (that doesn't include any fancy inlays etc).

Good luck with the project and post up progress pics if you have the time.

    Cheers Martin

Wow, you'll definitely have your work cut out for you with this one Arran. It took me 48 hours just to make a cigar box style ukulele in one of my school woodwork projects. Make sure you get stuck into that as soon as possible then, you've got a mighty big job ahead. Best way is to multitask as much as you can as possible i.e. anything you can try and get done while glue is drying etc.

man i love Cog, saw them at Metro last weekend, which was my 13th time seeing them, met them all a bunch of times, frigging top blokes.

if you pull that guitbox off, should try catch up with Flynn and get him to sign it

    yea man 12mm MDF

and spend a LOT of time on the template, then you get a router bit with the bearing at the top of the bit, so you can 'follow' the template

it makes the job a LOT neater

mahogany is nice wood to make

im making my Dean Razorback out of Mahogany.

A gibson Les paul single or double cutaway is probably the worst choice for a first guitar build particularly with a restricted time frame.
-it has a carved maple top which is quite a challenge
-the edge is bound and the neck is bound which adds to the time requirements
    - the set neck has to be just right in angle and this need an understanding of the geometry which you are unlikely to posess yet.

For a 12 week project you would be better off with something else, perhaps a bolt on style using a premade neck and just build the body.
Not trying to say you should never build a Les Paul, just not in this time frame for a project you have to finish for assesment.
Having seen LP builds documented it would seem quite easy to spend 48 hours just on building jigs and templates
