Glenn's projects :)
hey all
Appoligies for starting a new thread but thought i'd take a leaf outta andrews book an start a thread for all my ####
soooo anyway i've just started work on #2 an #3
not much so far. just got my blanks an started gluing up the body blanks.
First guitar is going to be....
Mahogany Body
Flamed maple drop top
Flamed maple neck
Rosewood fretboard
Second guitar is
Mahogany body
Quilted maple carve top
Wenge neck
Ebony fretboard
All the wood are stewmac woods Except the Wenge which i got from Aus Furniture timbers.
Both Fretboards are 25" Scale Pre Slotted an Arched. Both Stoptail Fender style Bridges but i got Hipshot ones that i think are a bit cooler String through body.
progress so far is glued up first body with maple drop tops on. stupidest mistake eveerrr on this... Bookmatched flamed maple an glued one piece on the wrong way
so no mirrored image!! IDIOT! oh well too late to change it now!
second guitar has just been glued up so tomorrow see how it looks.
first guitar is goin to be a new shape similarish to jackson dominion with diff horns.
second is gonna be same shape as my first guitar (thread 'my first!') but will be a carve top which is new for me an should be interesting
today i made some new templates as the fretboards i've bought are 25 inch scale instead of the 25 1/2 like my first i had to make a couple of adjustments
Yesterday had my dad help me fix up the edges of tops on his Jointer. He also Helped me make a nice lil stand for the Roybi thicknesser i bought well over a year ago an never used due to my fear of it! haha but got it goin all good. not a bad lil thing an quite usefull! shame its not bigger though.
Also bought a new Router today as the crappy Ryobi one that i bought, broke twice an got my money back on was no good. got me a nice Hitachi Monster (pic attatched)
ummm all i can really think of right now.AVERLEY Guitars!

That wenge looks fantastic! As does that maple. Some great wood for the necks.
Where did you get the fret boards from?
I like the look of the Hipshot bridge, I've got mine ordered as well.

i'll measure up the pieces i got an let you know the sizes. i cut the 3m length into 4. then cut one in half down the middle for my neck. the other 3 i havent cut in case i need wider for different headstock. its bit under 2 inch think from memory.. have to check

the flamed neck is quite good actually. prob got a bit more figure than the flame tops. i'll try get a better pic of the neck later today. worst bit is my dumb as mistake gluing one of the flame tops the wrong way is gonna see a good chuck of the figure miss the shape of the guitar!
anyway out to check on my quilted top gluing effort an to measure up some wenge an wat ever else i get doneAVERLEY Guitars!

Loooking good.
All is not lost with your tops. If you have a bit of extra width to spare (say 10mm), you can rip it carefully down the centre joint with a circular saw/bandsaw, and then redo the centre joint with the correct edges.
Look forward to seeing more progress,
Cheers,
Peter

Duh! peter your a genius! haha that would seem so obvious wouldnt! i'll have to have a look an see if i got enough room to do it. so to recap i would just slice it down the middle straighten out the edges an glue em back the right way around yea? an geez this forum is useful
bit more progress today. finished the last of the second template.
unclamped second body gluing an all good with that one
have done both truss rod cavity's an ready to glue up the headstocks (scarf joint?) an then fretboards
anyone got any advice one getting the tickness even an level with angled headstocks?
new headstock sketch too. any thoughts?
anyway here's a couple of todays pics an also a pic of my last guitar which got played by the guitarist in the band i do lighting for. awesome guitarist who gave it the big thumbs up! rockin!AVERLEY Guitars!

Agree with the headstock design being great.
I may just have to steal that idea

Hey Glen,
I made up a jig to do the neck angle. I took a pic below. It is set for 12 degrees, and you just clamp it to the flat, however you do need to line up the centre line acurately though. and then pass the router over the parralel sides and it machines a perfectly flat headstock at 12 degrees. Sweet as. I then do the same for the back but with a parrallell platform over the headstock as shown in the second picture. Food for thought.
Cheers,
Peter
