    Default First Guitar

    Hey everyone.
Im planning on building my first guitar. The blank im looking at buying measures 370 wide x 530 long and 44 thick. Im planning on making something similar to a jackson demmelition king V. I cant find dimensions for it anywhere so im wondering if anyone could help as to whether or not this blank will be big enough.
Anyhelp would be appreciated. Dimensions of similar style guitars would be great

    Thanks

Find your nearest good music store, tell them your problem & I bet they'll help you.Take a biggish bit of cardboard with you and find a guitar close in design & trace it out...Work from there...bloody easy, and any mistakes makes your unique.

Generally an electric guitar blank is 50mm thick, plus the best would be bookmatched.
I've got some "Lace", that could be cut to your exact requirement...
In America, I'm led to beleive, this timber is first class.
    regards, Stan

good idea. all the shops around here are all abit tight but so they might not go for it. and they mostly just stock fender. im not overly concerned on thickness as its my first one. just really gotta get the size right

thickness only really becomes a problem when it comes to putting a trem on it.... if its hardtail.. doesnt matter...

i have a drawing of one here somewhere and MAYBE... just maybe i might have dimensions....

is this the king V with the straight wings or the one with fins comming off of the inside of the wings?

i would take that lace offer.... good stuff from what iv seen and heard...

    from memory, i think the blank to make a king V is 450 x 500 ....
so your 370 x 530 might be ok.... assuming the grain runs along the 530, if you know what i mean? (hard to explain lol)
you will have to cut the sides off to get the body shape ..then flip the offcuts down and glue them on to make the wings....

you can pull that off if your painting it...
if you want to clear coat then go with the lace and stain

give me some time and ill look for this drawing and stuff
    oh and goodluck
    picked neck woods yet?

Does this vaguely help to explain what you're saying Andrew?

This was a Rhoads I started but set aside because my son wanted to go with slightly different dimensions. The second time around I cut and clamped on both sides to get the dimensions I needed ... but on this first one that we started you can see the final bit of joining I did by taking a piece from the top right and moving it to the top left ... excess glue and all. And as you say, painting covers the joins.

We've pretty well finished the second, bigger Rhoads and I'll probably go back and finish this smaller first one for a laugh ... and to experiment with finishes.

thanks andrew. the drawing would be a huge help. im thinking of doing a JEM now as it might be easier being my first attempt. id still love the drawing but coz ill prob attempt it for my 2nd. i was hoping to do it out of the one piece all glued up. is this not possible?

    yea thats what i mean

im about half way into building a neck thru V (rhodes style but i drew it up from stratch... hell its only 5 lines in the shape of a V lol...)

i was originally going to do a king V but the way i worked it out i could just get a rr V with the left over wood i had from another project that iv started (super strat style)

what do you mean when you say you want to do it out of one piece all glued up?

a jem or any strat based shape is pretty simple for a first build...

it comes down to what you are comfortable doing...
if you dont think you can pull off a V first time around then sit down and think about what you know you can do....

but i reckon you could do a V... its less wood that a jem and no belly cut to muck around with lol.
the only thing with a V is you need to be smart (example... routing for neck pup and neck pocket Before you cut the shape... once its cut you heve no wood next to the neck pocket the rest the router on, etc)

just plan it out and take it slow...
    you'll be right

    Default cost of body

A beautiful peice, bookmatched would set you back $200.00
Something spectacular as a 10mm cap on a solid body would be similar,

ok so i changed my mind about the king v and decided to go with the Rhoads V. I think it will probably be easier and more to my style. I found the plans in cad format but the dimensions were wrong so i found a plan from another build with dimensions so i used them. just wanted to check if everyone thinks the dimensions are right.

go to photobucket.com and open free account

upload your pics into your new photobucket account

each of your photobucketed pics will then have an IMG code (float mouse pointer over pic and it will appear)

copy the IMG code and paste into post on any forum

    preview to check
