Guitar Making EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Looking for ONE assistant for PART time work in a busy guitar workshop. Hours of employment are negotiable. Leading up to full time after you have proven yourself.
Ok, blunt, but to the point....
Roles include:
General guitar tech duties (setups, electronics, etc), sanding, cleaning, general housekeeping, etc. Looking to the future, expect to be trained to assemble, then build parts from scratch. If you have previous musical instrument building experience, you will move up the ladder very quickly.
Experience/Pay:
No experience required (although experience is definately preferred), training will be provided. Award rates (negotiable). Bonuses for efficient/clean/fast work. Tools and machinery provided. Access to workshop for private building is ok. Initiative is rewarded. My last assistant who recently left us was earning near double the award wage. Experience counts.
Hours:
No early starts (9:30ish, some days 10:30ish). No overtime or late nights, although some/all Saturdays would be nice. Days of work flexible, start and finish times flexible.
EVERY Monday off. No Sunday work. You might get invited to meet someone special afterhours though
Location:
Two minutes from the beach, one minute to local shopping centre, three minutes to Fremantle, WA. Local applications only please. I will NOT be taking applications from interstate unless you already have plans to move here, or have extensive experience in this field.
The Work:
Ultimately, you will be my direct assistant. You will eventually assist me in building guitars. Rough shaping necks. Sanding lacquer. Fret work. Gluing. etc etc. My right hand man! Also difficult repair work. Headstock breaks. Bracing issues. Refrets. Refinishes.
I already have a junoir, to handle the basic stuff like keeping the place clean, assembling pickups, etc. Ive already got a setup wizard, to make sure we get through all the setups and repair work, and he also does the majority of our hand winding of pickups.
You'll become another me. Hopefully. My dream is for my clients to come to me, and REQUEST a specific builder. You'll build that guitar from start to finish. Thats the dream. You want that too?
In the past, my assistants have travelled with me on business to the east coast or Aust, and to the USA to meet clients.
How to Apply:
Send an email covering letter AND a relevant resume to guitars at ormsbyguitars.com
Include contact details, etc. Include a SEPERATE list of previous experience, photos of instruments built, etc. Do not apply if you do not have any references. Do not send fuzzy out of focus photos. Last time I advertised, I had more than sixty applicants. Make yours stand out. Resumes etc must be in either WORD, or PDF format. Do not write your resume in an email... ATTACH IT to an email. Make an effort! I will look at your application for 30 seconds, before deciding if I think it warrants reading. MAKE IT COUNT.
Do not phone. Do not visit the workshop. Do not send a PM or SMS. Please, Im busy. I dont need distractions, I need help!!
Email ONLY!!
QUESTIONS??? Please ask them in this thread or email, please don't phone/walkin etc

Nothing in the ad says you have to be a kid to apply for the job. Im 52 and would apply for the job if I wasnt already gainfully employed.

Pretty good deal considering most of us pay big dollars to do the course. Here you get paid to do the course. I like an employer that is upfront.
Does the training include a piece of paper or a qualification or something to contribute to the skill set?
Is there a reason why you are only considering locals? I've generally found that people willing to move for the job demonstrate a level of dedication and an appreciation of the job that locals take for granted.
Cheers,
Peter

Good question Pete, and one that I generally get asked about from applicants...
Basically. I reckon I can build a guitar. I can do a bit of promo work. I seem to fall #### backwards into great jobs. Im really laid back and easy going. But Im not a confident employer. It takes me a long time to get used to having that person around. I couldnt just have someone start working for me full time and be down with that. I dont want my other assistants doing the training, I want to do it. I dont want to overload them. I want them to slowly work towards perfection. I dont have a bank overdraft, or line of credit, and I dont want that either. So I like to ease into an employment situation to ensure it's the right thing for me, my bank balance, and my employee.
So, interstate applicants would need to be aware of that. It took me 3-4 months to 'ease' into working with my last assistant, and for someone starting a new life in a different state (or country) that plays on my mind, and makes me feel uncomfortable.
3-4 months or part time work probably wont be enough to provide a livable wage for a new resident.
Its more of a close team, than employer/employee. My business and reputation is number one, and anyone looking to join that team, will only ever be brought in slowly so I can keep control over the output and quality...

I have completed a course in fine wood design and construction which was done at the Forrest Herritage Centre ,Australian school of fine wood in Dwellingup this was completed in 2008
I also have done variouse other courses Chair making with Neil Erasmus , also Marquetry courses by Gary Murfet. Currently ive been making boxes and other bits of furniture which i have incorporated marquetry into and sell them at the local tourist centre.Guitar making sounds like a good way to encorporate and develope marquetry skills. you can veiw some of my work in the marquetry forum .

Ive had a guy bring his guitar in to give me a "performance" with his dad on backing vocals, in the hope an inpromptue 'gig' will give him a better chance. I asked him if he would be giving us tunes like this each time he strung a guitar. Yes! was the enthusiastic answer...
Having said that, I had Graham Greene help me out for a couple weeks (which turned into 9 months) doing setup work. He'd string up a guitar, set it up, and then start wailing away and improvising over whatever song was on the radio. We got stuff all done, but damn it was good fun. That guy can play!

Is this position still available? I assume a great opportunity like this would have been taken long ago...
