    Lightbulb Guitar Ideas

Hey im looking to build my first guitar in my wood tech class this next august/september and ive been looking for good ideas on designs. I really want to do a les paul design but i havent had any luck in finding good tutorials and blueprints. If anyone has any other ideas or where i could find some blueprints (free please) it would be of great help

you can buy a reasonable set of full size LP plans from stewmac
i think perry ormsby [rhoads56] at ormsby guitars sells em as well
a worthwhile buy and not too expensive

if you get any reasonable LP copy you can measure most of what is not on that pdf linked in the above post - it is a full size plan i think

with any plans there will be areas that may seem vague and you will need to fill the gaps in yourself

dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

Hey, the way I did it was to get a good picture, google once again, and find something with a known dimension (usually the pickups or the like) and work out the ratio between the picture and the real thing. then you have a baseline to work out the rest of the dimensions. My daughter (yeah a 14 year old girl) has used this method to produce a really good mockingbird template (see her build elsewhere on this list)
The rest is learning how a guitar actually works. Pickup placement bridge placement neck relief headstock angle etcetcetc all fall into place when you learn HOW a guitar works.

My suggestion is that if you're going to build a guitar then get yourself a good book

this is the one I first used and it is great.

If you want to do it, then do it properly.

We all on this list started in your shoes, and I can guarantee you that all the information is there on the 'net, you just have to go looking and take the time to learn.

    Good luck!
    Cheers!

Andy B is becoming a grumpy old man!!

I know how you feel though ... I get a little torn myself when I think people haven't done their homework or at least lurked for a while.

But hey ... DarkFiend could be the next Floody ... lots of questions to start with, and then a key contributor to this community.

    Potentiometers.

The only real issue with the length of the shafts is the thickness of the body that you need the pot to go through. With a longer shaft, you don't need to route the bottom of the control cavities as thin for the shaft to make it all the way through.

For that reason, I like the Di Marzio long shaft pots ... plently of room for error when routing.

But if you're only going through a pickguard (well, not an an LP) a short shaft pot is fine.
