    Default G'zonta Drum tuning stand

Roping and tuning drums is a steady job on the African drums that I have been making over the last couple of years.
Not to mention it is hard on the hands.

A friend had a stand that he uses and it makes the job quicker and easier.

    Today I finished my version.
The base is from and outdoor umbrella stand. It is a lump of concrete so should be stable enough.

A steel pipe supports a wooden cone. The jembe sits on the cone for tuning.

An old clutch pedal is connected to the pipe. A rod is welded to the pedal for attaching a short length of rope and a cleat for connecting to the drums vertical ropes.

A spring returns the pedal to the start position.

Once one rope has been tighten, the drum is rotated on the cone and the next rope tightened. You continue around the drum until you have the tension/tuning that you are after.

    Now to test it out.

Nice work there scally. Is the pedal a lever for tensioning the ropes?

    Cheers,

    Default Mali paint job

    thanks Peter.

    That's exactly right.
You connect the pedal rod to a vertical rope, push the pedal down and you increase tension on the rope and skin.

Normally you use your hands or a lever. But it takes a fair bit of strength and it you have to wrestle the djembe on the ground.

This should make it much easier.

I gave it a quick spray paint to make it look a bit neater.

    Hi Jeff

I hadn't thought about using it on the horizontals??

    It probably should work.

The rod with the cleat rope attached is too long on my version but I could easily replace it with a shorter one.
The rod is screwed into a saddle on the pedal so it can be easily changed over.
alternatively I could weld another hook down the rod and tie the cleat rope to it.

Will give it a test over the next week and see what it can do and if any modifications are needed.
