Default Head Stock Thickness - Strat Style

    Hi,

I am building a strat and in Hiscocks - Make Your Own Electric guitar he sais to ake the headstock 1/2 in thick - Which I did ,,,

I now read in other places (Most other books) that they should be 9/16 thick ...

Firstly will it matter that much , and is this a print error in the book ?

I know I can put a cap on it but I have finished the transition and I really didn't want to start mucking around with it ....

    Thanks

    Greg

I don't think it will matter that much - Obviously, a thicker headstock is going to be stronger but were not talking a great deal of difference here. I've made some thinner headstocks myself and not had any issues at all.

Check you can mount your tuners mounted properly ( make sure the ferrules push in flush ) - that's really the only issue you might have

    Cheers

I have a 30 year old Ibanez Strat copy that has a 12mm headstock thickness and its sweet as. Also a 1997 MIJ strat that measures 14mm or 9/16 and a 1972 Strat 13mm so 1/2" i gather.

I did the transition with a 50mm drum sander set up in an upside down drill mounted in my router table ...then finised it off by hand..It cam out OK,but I might have been better using a larger drum sander so it wasn't as steep.

Floody, I bought a oscillating spindle sander from Carbatec a while back, its perfect for doing the transition as well.
