    G'Day old bloke,
Before you rush out and buy any kits, sit back and read your books tell the missus Rome was not built in a day and a guitar is not built in a day.
When you are ready to start work out if you want to build from a kit just like a leggo set or if you want to build the whole guitar yourself right from scratch.
And if you want tonewoods contact me and I will send you photos of sets available.
    Regards, Bob

Depends whether you intend to build more than one. A bending iron can cost over $200 and a kit enables you to avoid that cost. as well as shipping costs from a number of sources.

Agree Jeff, to build guitars is not a cheap hobby thats for sure and if he is only going to build one guitar a kit might be the way to go.
Then maybe if he can find a local builder he might get some good idea what way to go, and also these days there is a lot of courses available at Adult Ed, Etc.
    Cheers, Bob

Are you talking acoustic, steel strings or nylon? Whereabouts are you located?

Ok so an acoustic nylon string guitar (also known as a classical guitar)
You will probably want to build it face down on a solera (workboard)
For a traditional mainly handtools build have a look at Classical Guitar Construction in the style Antonio Torres replicating La Suprema 1864 with tornavoz and plans by an American Swede
but bear in mind that most use a plywood solera with adjustable blocks around the sides.
Also search youtube for classical guitar building there is a lot there.
I find it hard to recommend a book, I have several but they all have flaws or are too complex for the beginner like you.
David Schram's online apprentice on DVD is quite good too Online Apprentice Home Page

There is a member by the name of woodrat on the ANZLF who resides in wauchope which is the mid north coast near port macquarie. I know that he would be a great help in steering you in the right direction. Google search aus luthier forum and it will come up.
