Need help! Heavy wood guitar
Hello everybody! I’m new here and need help for my project: olive wood (and epoxy) telecaster.
The guitar works perfectly but the weight is a problem (5 kg or 12 lb), i need to remove at least 2 lb, it’s a gift for my 11yo nephew and it is too heavy even for an adult!
I don’t want to mess with the front, a common solution would be to carve the back (in the left part-full wood) but i would’t like to have a large plastic plate to cover it. An alternative would be to carve the side of the guitar, using a router and then a drill, staying within the thickness (i.e. 2 cm or 0.8 inches out of 4 cm) and then bend a metal plate to cover the slit. I could also use the existing carved shapes to remove more wood material (i.e. the neck or pockup slots). Any suggestion on techniques and tools? What do you think about those solutions?
Thanks a lot!!

Think of it as a Conan The Barbarian scenario: giving a child a very heavy guitar, is like making him work a large mill (called the Wheel Of Pain) so he becomes a large muscular man. In his 30's, he'll be interviewed by Rolling Stone and they'll ask if he's on steroids. He'll answer with "no, but if you're going to learn how to play, then learn with a real weapon, not with a toothpick". Lets just hope in the interview, he also doesn't desire to "crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women" ..... that part of the scenario is not good!
On a serious note, that guitar is just spectacular to look at; it is very beautiful and inspiring. I fear you can only detract from the guitar now and 5 kg is not that bad (except for probably a child), but an 11 year old is only going to stay that way for 12 months. In a couple of years he'll probably be able to pick you up and I'm sure you're more than 5 kg. I think what he'll end up with instead, is serendipity. Perhaps you could make a quick/rough, smaller alternative for the interim period.

Update! Many guitar players told me that 5 kg would be too much for any age so I finally decided to remove as much weight as I can, carving the back
950 g removed! Now I plan to seal the hole with plexiglas and silicone an pour a clear resin layer...it will look like glass with a view of the wood inside [emoji28] let’s see...
