    Default Humidity

Does anyone have a problem with maintaining a decent humidity for building guitars? (40-50% or so) Is it a problem where you are? Where I'm based it can be 90%+ for weeks on end and then in winter drop down to almost 0% as everything freezes and it gets down to -20deg c (any moisture in the air freezes too.) Sometimes when I fit something together and come back to it the next day the humidity has swollen and warped it. For those of you who think Chicago is a cold city.... your right.... in winter..... -20c...... but summer, 35c and 90% humidity. Oh and its not that windy either.

No problem in my workshop with humidity. A dehumidifier is on duty around the clock and during the winter a ceramic panel heater is on around the clock to keep the temp up and humidity down. An airconditioner will be going in this summer.

The first thing you need to do is get a hold of an accurate hygrometer....note that alot of hygrometers are not very accurate. Ideally get a couple and compare readings.

If high humidity is a problem then you have two options:

    1. climate control the entire work area or
    2. create a climate controlled portion of your workshop. You can barrier off part of your workshop with plastic or build yourself a drying box or cupboard into which you put your tops when youre not working on them. The heat source for same can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb.
Whatever note you blow youre never more than a semitone away from the correct one....(Miles Davis)

I have done the plastic and dehumidifier. and it works quite well. I have a corner in the basement. Plastic keeps the dust out of the house too I also have a workspace in the garage and sometimes I'll forget a piece and leave it out there.....
