Could be New Guinea Walnut, nice bit of figure. Here is a bit of a list of woods that come out of PNG, that may be a place to start.

    Kwila
    Taun
    Malas
    PNG rosewood
    New Guinea Walnut
    Vitex
    Hekakora

Ultimately the only way to find out is to build an instrument. I have seen extraordinary instruments built out of supposedly average tonewood and visa versa. A quick test is to hold the piece of timber one third from the top and rap it with your knuckle. If it goes "boooiinnggggg....." its a good start. If it goes "thuk" you may want to see what else is in your stash.

Is it extremely hard, like say Gidgee? I picked some fretboard blanks from the working with wood show in Brizvegas last year, they called it New Guinea Ebony, it looked exactly like that. I made a couple fretboards out of it and it was pretty darn good, Cheers Paul.
