G'day Darren,and welcome.
I'm just over the hill in Donvale if you ever care to drop over to the workshop for a chinwag/ borrow a few books or just a looky.
I'm in agreeance with your philosophy of delving in deep and doing it properly from the very start. BTW I reckon you'll breeze through it

Hey Darren,
Welcome on board mate.....and another Victorian joins the fold hehehehe!
I backup Deano's recommendation of taking a 10 minute tops drive to
Matthews Timber in Rooks Rd Vermont.....great selection of timber to choose from and very conveniently located for you.......talk to Ian and tell him what you are doing, he is top bloke and really helpful. If you are lucky, he might even tell you the story about the piece of QLD Maple he found in the mud one day that ended up being used on his own guitar
Good luck with the build mate and as you can see, plenty of helpful folks frequent this thread

Hi,
Thanks again all.
Stu, appreciate the offer to drop over and have a look, PM me your details and I'll give you a call sometime. I'm just off Junction Rd so not far away.
Went into Billy Hyde music and had a look at basses there, and got some good advice from the guy there, so know a bit more about what I want now.
Will check out Matthews Timber, I've been there a few times and never gone wrong.
Now to go book shopping...
Regards,
Darren

I might add, when doing your book shopping check out Amazon books.
I recently purchased Bob benedetto's 'Building an arch top guitar' from there. The book cost me 30$ opposed to $50+ from stew mac and other luthier suppliers. It's worth while having a look around because for some reasons prices vary from shop to shop...
Dymocks and Borders at Knox city shops have access to some guitar books, as I have bought from them before, normally you have to order them in!Deano

Try Carbatec for guitar building books too. They've got the three big ones. Not the cheapest around though.
