Instant Mandolins in Tasmania
Hello from Santa Cruz, Ca in the 'States.
Just a quick pre-notice that I'll be teaching a course, "Build a Mandolin in Four Days" in the Hobart, Tasmania area in April. This is a course that I started about 17 years ago for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. I stopped teaching it for a while and turned it over to my pal and co-teacher Michael Hornick, but picked it back up a couple of years ago to teach in Oakland, Ca at an art school called the Crucible www.thecrucible.org and then at the Roberto Venn School of Lutherie www.roberto-venn.com I'll be teaching the course at the high school shop in Woodbridge, Tas., in April under the auspices of the Tasmanian Adult Education Department with support from the Folk Federation of Tasmania.
We'll be building mandos in the Gibson "Army Navy" format with flat tops and backs, but built Spanish-style, face down on workboards. The course is spread out over two weekends, and on the first three three days we'll assemble the instruments from kits of parts I'll prepare both in the States and in Tasmania. The fourth day will be devoted to stringing up and setting up the instruments "in the white."
There will be a lot more information when the next Adult Ed catalog comes out sometime in February.
Hope to see some of you there, and if this one goes well, I'll be back~

Just over the hill from me. Maybe we will have a beer - either traditionally or in the local "face down" way. How are you finding dealing with the folk federation?

My dealings really are through Peter Hicks who plays in a band, "Coyote Serenade", with my girlfriend, Louise Bell. Peter's been great, and the main thing that I've needed is a letter of support for doing this teaching gig so as to clear getting a temporary work visa. It's tricky, to say the least, but a wonderful woman in the Aussie embassy in Washington, DC guided me through the process.
If all goes well on this first round, then I'm going to try to start integrating in Tasmanian timbers into as much of the course as I can do. I'll have access to a little workspace in Penna, outside of Hobart, and I'm going to set it up as a bit of a lutherie shop for when I'm in Tasmania which is likely to be three times a year. I look forward to meeting up with any and all Tassia woodworkers and luthiers.

Hi Rick, I met one of your compass Ukes at the Harrietville festival a month or so ago. It was cool!!
So I guess I met Louise playing it as well, hope I was polite and not too distracted by the Uke. Good luck in Tas, hope the mandolin class goes well!

I'll be over in early February for a visit and to start getting ready for the April class. Come on over to the Lark Distillery Pub in Hobart either on February 6th or the 13th for the Coyote Serenade gig...it's on the early side. I'll be there!

Woodturner...that would be Bob, right? I checked out your site, and realized I'd found it before. I'm very interested in integrating as much Tasmanian timber into future lutherie courses as is practical, given that my main workshop is here in the 'States. I am going to be setting up a small workshop at Louise's place in Penna to do some prep work and eventually be able to build, but it will be a while before I have much equipment there for processing, sanding, etc. However, I'd also be very interested in facilitating export of lutherie timbers over here to the US. I've got great contacts here, and I also have a Baker 20 hp horizontal band resaw set up for very thin kerf sawing of tops, backs, and sides for acoustic guitar sets or electric tops.

Phil, I'm going to be a regular in Tasmania what with having a wonderful girlfriend in the Hobart area. Hopefully there will be enough interest in this mandolin course to give me the chance to teach a couple or three times a year for Adult Ed. I'm going to be coming up with a pineapple shaped uke that will be built pretty much the same way as the mandolin, so I'll be able to alternate mando and uke course offerings. If you're going to be at the Cygnet Folk Festival, look up my pal Louise Bell; she's playing with the String Chickens at the festival.

I will be dispensing (sadly not dispensing with) beer at the top pub on Friday and Saturday nights during the festival. Come in and say hello, I'm the surly old guy.
