    Default kerfing question

I was just wondering if you guys soak your kerfing or pre-bend it in your bender?

none of the books i have mention anything other than just wrapping it around the inside of the body but when i do it it just keeps snapping...
I'd rather get it on in one piece if possible to look cleaner.
    cheers thanks for the help.

    Grant,

I just run the kerfing quickly around my bending iron before gluing into the side. I dont generally use any water at all. If youre having problems with the stuff snapping then try spritzing it with water from a spray bottle before bending. When bending take it gently and dont try and bend to finished radius in one go. Run the entire length of kerfing slowly over the iron without bending first so the wood heats up before starting the bending.

On most of my guitars I usually only bother bending the kerfing going around the waist area. The kerfing I use (mahogany kerfing from Gilet Guitars) seems to fit the bouts quite nicely without any bending.

    Cheers Martin

I used the reverse kerfing with the only problem areas at the waist and cutaway. As Martin said, a quick run over the bending iron and it softens enough to bend cleanly (but I used a light water spray when I did mine).
