This is by far the best explaination of Truss rod adjustment you'll find anywhere on the net. Is it then any surprise it was written by a bass player
All jokes aside, the principles for truss rod adjustment apply equally for guitar and bass so go through the tutorial on this site before you do anything else.

A truss rod isn't designed to adjust action....DONT start playing with the truss rod unless theres an issue with neck relief. If the relief is ok and theres still a buzz then look at action. If action is high then look at other causes of buzzes (high frets, notched saddle etc).
Something else to look at is the way you play. Sounds silly but its the first thing I look at when someone brings in a guitar with a buzz.Whatever note you blow youre never more than a semitone away from the correct one....(Miles Davis)
