Yay!!!!!!
All done
18 sealer coats and 10 top coats
Woo Hoo!!!!
Now a week of "leaving it the hell alone"
Lil' Mongrel is spending this week doing the actual written part of the assignment, photos and powerpoint presentation. At the mo' she is trying to convince me to play for her at her booth. This is a pretty big assignment, they set themselves up a booth in the hall and the display is open during school and in the evening so they can show the whole school and parents etc
Anyone make a suggestion on the polish and buffer I should use for the colourtone? Lambswool? Foam? Would a car buffer work? or would I be better off with a drill or grinder buffer.
I have a fabric strop that I use to finish my sharpening tools, but its 1400rpm, would that be too fast?Cheers!Mongrel

ha! i look like i have red hair!!!
i really want mongrel to play at my booth, because I'm going to be too busy telling everybody that guitar building isn't just throwing some timber and strings together, it's a whole lot more then that.
I dont know how im going to 'not' touch the guitar, it's just so beautiful!!!!!!
this is what i want to do at the minute with all this written work!! OMG!! lol!Lil' Mongrel

I've used the swansdown mop from ubeaut on a variable speed drill with the revs down as low as possible, even then you have to watch out for the heat build.
We can always do it the longer way, using some quality 1500-2000 grit sandpaper and totally dulling the finish, but not thru the coats, then using some Megiuars swirl remover by hand with a microfibre cloth to rub out the shine.
This'll put muscles on LM in no time!!

There is a bit of rough stuff to eliminate (you saw my "clean" spray room) so the 1200-1500 wet sand is most definitly on the cards.
Thats why I was wondering about the car buffers, they are pretty low rev (thou I suppose the outer speed would be pretty high)
I guess you just use the rubber drill pads and a small lambswool cover?Cheers!Mongrel

Im no expert but Id be going with a lambswool pad on the drill (using a rubber polishing pad). The drill must be able to go really slow though.
Looks great, a really nice job

I've only done one guitar finish so far. Did it in Tru-oil. I polished it up with MicroMesh used wet up to 12000 grit. I could have got a bit more gloss with a buffer I think, but it's pretty good just with the MM.
PeterThe other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Happy to hear this & also wanted to say that this thread is what piqued my interest in this forum.
I've found so much much more here as well, but, this project & the pictorial as well as the documentation is extremely well done.
Great work! I hope you make another and another and another!

It looks great.
It must be dry by now. Come on..........String it an power it up!!!
I have been using UBeaut's swansdown mop in an electric drill and EEE.
You can vary the speed. Faster seems better to keep the wax soft.
It works well on oils and poly finishes.Scally

Yep, $$$ willing.
I started making a list of the tools that died during the build and I hit about the $500 mark (ouch) nothing worse than having to spend money replacing tools you already have, when I could've spent it on NEW tools!!!
It's gratifying to see so many people have gotten something out of the thread. I must say that its a bit of extra pressure thou. It's not a perfect build by any stretch of the imagination, and when you're posting as you go its rather obvious if you balls anything up!
Anyway, we've got the "electrickery" to go and all that stuff. The end of the thread, I guess will be the presentation at school.
Again, thanks for everyones support. Next project (aside from MY guitar) will be an accoustic, and I'd dare say Lil' will be in on that like flies on a garbage truckCheers!Mongrel
