The next installment!!
Today we wicked superglue around the inlays and installed the side dots.
cut the headstock and thinned it to a half inch or so.
Drilled the electronics holes (before I forget)
cut and installed the truss rod fillet.
Installed the fretboard and carved the cutaway (I have this stupid superstition about the cutaway, I NEVER carve it until the neck is all but ready to go on.)
Gots to give it a test drive...
Hopefully tomorrow we can start shaping the neck and radius the fretboard.
Lookin like an axe now...
Lil' will be along soon, she is crotcheting with her great grandmother at the kitchen table at the moment, definitly a Jack-ette of all trades this one!
Ciao, Jason.Cheers!Mongrel

mongrel was very proud of the head stock, well, so am i.
i don't know how many times i got threatened to whacked across the face with it.
i nearly stuck my hand in the super glue, smart move!!!
one of my favourite bon jovi songs came on, and i was pretending to play the body of the guitar, and he said,, "let me put the neck and fret board on it and take a pic of you, i promise i won't send it to anyone!!!"
ummmmmm crapola!!

Hey guys, you're going gangbusters on this thang !!!!!!
What's your method of coveing out (recessing)for the control knobs on the top?
Bon Jovi..................cough cough.....choke he he he
You working to a tight deadline for this , lil' mongrel ?

I used a cove router bit without its bearing in my drill press, and lots of thumb (as opposed to drum) sanding!
We've got 7 - 8 weeks to get it finished, I think. Give us plenty of time and scope for the finish.
Better Bon Jovi than most of the junk getting around today (I'm getting old, the musics too loud and I can't understand the lyrics)
Some Velvet Revolver came on my shed computer and her ears pricked up. She likes GNR and a few other hair bands. Not that I had any influence on her taste in music
Lets see what she says when I post this:
She's been a Daddys girl for a while!
20 months old BELLOWING through a PA...
Sweet sweet music!Cheers!Mongrel

Not a lot of progress today (OK bugger all!) while lil' was at work I started doing the math for the bridge and the string thu's. I want to rebate the bridge into the top by about 7mm so the string thrus will only be about an inch and a half from the bridge, but it gives me the 15 deg string break angle. I might be able to stretch it out to 12 deg, as it will only have 10's strings on it. Dunno.
Looks like the neck and fretboard are pretty well lined up, always a relief when they are within a bulls roar.
Hopefully more to be done in the next couple of days...
JasonCheers!Mongrel

Down to the fiddly stuff now.
We have drilled the headstock, radiused the fretboard, resawn the fretslots to the right depth and have been fiddling around with shellac and filler on scraps (smelly and messy!)
Radiusing and polishing the fretboard, started with 80 went thru 120, 240 and then 400 wet and dry with lemon oil, lightly sprayed and polished in.
Making the fret slots deeper to go with the new radius.
Candle to swipe the saw on, makes cutting a breeze! Screws and nails can benefit from this treatment in hard wood.
Checking th fret slot depth, (man I gotta clean up my bench!!!)
Beveling the slots.
Stay tuned for the next installment...Cheers!Mongrel

Here we go again... Fretting today.
First off I had to build myself a fret bender.
It churns out perfect 10 inch radius wire and cost about $5.
No bells or whistles, no handle either, just push the wheel around with your thumb while guiding the wire with your other hand.
Banging them in:
Choking the hammer there like a pro
Nipping the ends:
I like the rubberised hammer, it works really well, and cost $4 from supercheap and there is no way you can ding the fret or the timber. I was supposed to make some sandbags for shock absorption but I didn't get around to it.
Here comes Lil...Cheers!Mongrel

hi guys,
mongrel FINALLY got around to making the jig thingy. we spent ages at bunnings trying to find all the parts. i apparently got annoying coz i was tired and hungry (got up at 6.30 to be at work by 8, and was hungry, and sore)
we did fretting today, and i was choking the hammer alot,,,, i was so nervous!!
its turning out very well!!!
this is cool, my english teacher (who's an oldie) lets me go onto this site at school to get pics from this thread,, he thinks its the best thing he's ever seen a girl do for this project!!!!

Great progress, team.
I remember the same scenario when I went to Bunno's and spent an eternity
working out the best bits and pieces to build my fret bender. Mine's pretty similar.
Umm....................why the 11th fret marker though ? Oops ?
Got ya. he he..........couldn't resist.
Deano did the same thing to me last year.
