Maton's 808 style
hey guys,
does anyone know much about the design of the maton 808 style blue grass guitars?
reason being, i would love to buy one of those, but they cost about $1500. so i thought i could perhaps try to make one for cheaper?
would it be the same type of bracing as a dreadnought, but just the size and shaping of the bracing is made to fit to the shape of the 808?
or perhaps someone could recommend me a another finger-style guitar design?
reason i like the 808, is that Tommy Emmanuel uses one for many of his finger picking songs.
thanks guys

If this is your first build then I'd stick to a vanilla flavoured OM or Dreadnaught design and keep to a fairly standard bracing design. I'd also stay away from cutaways...a high chance of stuffing up the bending job and quickly losing any interest in guitar building.
If finger picking is your thing then probably an OM might be your cup of tea.
Get your hands on one of the books on acoustic building and try to stick to same for your first build.

ahh, thanks for the advice.
haha, i don't think i'll ever return to the light side, i'm already too deep into the dark.
.. and i havn't even built my first guitar yet!
so i'd better get some expereince then.. i was thinking about that kit from mal. hopefully he'll be able to make a steel..
do you know of anyone that makes OM style kit's?

Im only aware of the LMI and Stewmac kits. John Hall at Bluescreek Guitars in the US also has kits. John is very good to deal with.

the old BG808 was a nice little guitar
its about the size of a classical but with narrow 16" radius neck stung with steel]
no cutaway on the old ones
what about starting with the stewmac 000
looks like a nice guitar and will give you a similar compressed middy sound to the 808 but i reckon better the new 808's dont impress me muchray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

I actually bought an EBG808 a few weeks ago, so if you have any more specific questions regarding the bracing etc, let me know and i will get the measuring stick out!
I should also add that i am not yet any kind of luthier, budding or otherwise!! I just play em! I had a look at my other dreadnaughts and the bracing seems similar... but i really am not sure what to look for, to help you.
Cheers
Pete
