    Default meranti solid body? Anyone?

I have a heap (yes heap) of 'dark red meranti' (Pacific Maple). Excellent condition, very old, heavy and dark red in colour.

Now I know its not of the caliber of Mahogany, however, I was thinking of going all out and making an Gibson Explorer copy with some overwound HB's

I could do the body out of 3 pieces and they are plenty thick enough. Pics are on the 'timber' forum under post by me bjsa06 if your are interested.

Has anyone tried meranti solid body electrics? On a scale of 1-5 (5 being Ash, Alder, Hog, Qld Maple & 1 being plywood!) where do you think meranti rates as a tonewood?

When you consider that "Meranti" comes from about twenty (or more) different species of Shorea then your question is too general to answer but that dark red meranti is some very nice wood and I reckon it would be as good as anything similar to it. I have seen some plywood bodies that I am pretty sure were Shorea so your answer may lay there.

Life is good when you are amongst the wood

GDay Mate. I used a yellow Meranti to build a thick neck for my second build a Les Paul Junior Single Cut replica. Plays very well, and Im happy with the neck so I would think a body with it would work well. The only think with my build is it is heavy in the body and the neck. 10pounder plus, but sustain is great.

    Cheers
