I thought you all might like to see this design I came up with to attach the neck to the body. The rout for the neck pocket goes right up against the pickup cavity, and on the first one I built I left the pickup cavity shallow to create a shoulder for the neck to set against. I had been using the same pickup location as a Les Paul but came across an article that said this wasn`t the best location, so I moved it towards the bridge and it increased the power to where it overpowered the bridge pickup. I found I couldn`t lower the neck pickup enough, because of the shallow rout, to balance it out so I came up with this. The neck and pickup rout are the same depth and instead of a shoulder I`m using 3 indexing pins to keep the neck positioned. I made a simple drilling jig and use various drill bushings to get the size holes I need, the holes for the index pins are the exact size needed for the threaded inserts. I used inserts by EZ-LOCK because they have large knife threads, but they have to be installed in a drill press to keep from lifting the wood at the start of the whole. I also made a little tool to cut a recess around the insert so I could place a piece of veneer, made with a leather punch, over the hole to keep the glue out when attaching the fret board. There are a few more pictures in my photo album if you want to check them out. If you have any questions, let me know. Mike
