Default Noob question- finishing- too much info!

    Hi, all,

I've recently found this forum, and have been trying to absorb some of the info on it. Well, suffering info overload is more correct!

Is there a faq or something on this site dedicated to guitar finishing? I'm fast approaching that stage now with my own project, and there's so much info here. I tried going through the multitude of posts in the Finishing area; is there one post with that basic stuff about what's the best to use, What's the easiest to use, when to use it, how long to leave it on for and where to get it from? I've seen some of the finishes here, and while I gawk in amazement, there's a lot of knowledge to be had!

Any directions to a good First Read would be appreciated, and then I'll pop out the back and be back with my finished axe for all to see.

(In this case, I'm making it easier for myself by making Project#1 a solid finish. So far it is a tele with fat pups (using poles out of Jazz pups), sperzel locking tuners, four way switch mod, clear pickguard, and... Well, that's about all there is to a tele! Why a tele- I had access to an unused and unfinished body and neck.)

    Cheers,

    B#m

    Thanks, all.

I've got both editions of Hiscock (there's a hint about my age...) and the blank too. I was hoping for a more Australia-centred approach, with our brands etc. I'm sure I can work through the pain!

I've been too busy mucking around with the electronics side of things up to now. However, any more contributions are welcome.

Looks like we're off and stumbling.

I've got an orphan t-neck for it- rose on maple. I've caressed the back of the neck to get the profile I like on it. The frets will be dressed before disassembly for the body painting.

The body started off as two pieces of alder, and I used one of my 'tele-styles' as a template. No, not directly! It's been cut, sanded down to about 220, and routed, rounded, tidied up and ready to go. The bridge, pickup and all the little bits'n'pieces are sitting there waiting to go.

It basically needs sealing, levelling up, and painting from here. I'm going to go with a solid finish first up because it should be easier to hide any errors that way!

So really, I'm at the stage of what's the best combination of sealer/paints to use. What's a good lacquer, and where to get it from. That way I can get that organised while I'm dressing up the frets.

    Cheers,

    B#m

I looked there. However, there is so much information in there, it's impossible to find just the basics.
