Okay now Ive got a bit of time...
I was given a bango awhile back cause I wanted to learn of all reasons
Anyway once given the thing I started muckin about got a book and tried to learn.. so a month later... putwing!!! the silly string halfway down the neck pops!
mmmm so... I go have a sticky beak at the local musicnuts shop in town... no bnago strings!!!
Now in talking with a few bods apparently one can use the D string from a guitar for this side string... now Im wondering how the bloody blue blases you tune it???
I bought one of them nifty jifty tuner thingymabobs but well I musta missed the point it hit the right note billygoat cause I broke another string
Anyone give me a clue here?
CheersBelieve me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!

Shane,
Didn't you know? No-one sleeps with the banjo player! That's why they give the things away!
Best bet for dummies (like yours truly) is a chromatic tuner which goes the whole length of the scale (and back again). You should be able to get one for less than $50.00 and you can easily see where you are up to.
Make sure you get the sort that does have the full scale, and runs through the notes on the way up. You don't need any of the other flash stuff.
Mine's got a red light and a green light AND it beeps, AND I still don't always get there!
Cheers.

You have made a very good point Gra, come to think of it I don't think I've ever heard one tuned!
It is said, that like Mandolin players , banjo players spend half their time tuning their instrument, and the other half playing out of tune.

Ive heard a few things about banjos. I know they sound better when theyre out of tune so I wouldnt bother buying the fancy electronic tuner.

I don't know the tuning but if it is fret 4 & 5 for reference it should be easy, or just head up into the hills with your straw hat and sawn off overalls, bare foot and buck teeth, you may even get some free lessons and a sore bum yeeeeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaa

use the the 5th as a drone and tuning depends on your key also what tuning you use
I used to tune it [when i was a folkie] like the bottom 4 on a guitar and the 5th i tuned to the root or 5th of the key the tune was in. used to be able to fake it okray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

On the subject of banjos, went to the Talbot (Vic) market yesterday and there was a young guy, wouldn't have been older than about 15 I think, playing the banjo together with an older guy on guitar and they provided some very nice background music to a very pleasant market visit.

I had a banjo once...I left it on the back seat of my car and some miserable prick broke the back window & left another one beside it...
Definition of 'perfect pitch'....hitting the middle of a dumpster with a banjo from 20 metres...
