Pallet Eucalyptus Tenor guitar
Hey guys,
Figured you would appreciate my latest guitar build...
This is a 4-string tenor guitar built out of pallet bits and pieces and scrap....
Turns out that the back, sides, bridge plate, bridge, head plate, and heel cap are some orangey flavor of Eucalyptus - likely the flooring stuff.... The top was made out of some sort of Coniferous softwood that I pulled off the side of a shipping crate.... I think it might be either Pine or Spruce... not totally sure. Neck is probably African Mahogany - I salvaged a broken shelf for the neck wood....
It turned out to be a smashing success - the thing has a beautiful voice... Loud and clear...
Any idea what sort of Eucalyptus this might be... and why aren't people using it more?

G'day John, it's always hard to say from a pic but maybe Sydney Blue Gum or maybe not. People are using Eucalypt more and more. I have seen a few tasty bits on Tim's Australian Tone Woods site and I have 8 or so sets of one of my local ones with a nice bit of figure for future use.

I got a set of templates from KMG on Ebay.... Used that for drawing out the basic outline.
I basically just sketched up the bracing scheme so it would have good X-brace to bridge wings contact and so the X-brace junction ended up somewhere around halfway between the bridge and the soundhole. Added an A-brace in the upper bout... I will see if I can dig up a pic of the bracing scheme...
Wow - that Tasmanian Ash is pretty stuff....
I have a couple boards of Blue gum that are real pretty too.... but they are just so light looking... and hard as stone!
I am suspicious that this stuff is that plantation grown stuff used for Flooring... as the only other Eucalyptus we see here in the states is from imported yard trees that somehow went wild.... People don't make much lumber out of it... though it's beautiful stuff...
Thanks

Here's a pic of the bracing scheme... This is the only pic I have of it - and it wasn't quite finished here... I didn't add any more bracing - but I did a bit of whittling and sanding to clean it up.... I also capped all the junctions.
You can see it is more or less a conventional tapered X-brace...
My plan is to have it back around Christmas time... Brother is coming into town and he plays everything... It will probably also need the usual adjustment after the first month or so of playing...
Thanks
