Pickup wiring Q
I have a second hand bass wired as a j-bass that was built from parts. It is very buzzy, and I want to make it quieter. I am going to check the soldering (strings and cavity are properly shielded/grounded) but also wonder about the pickups. J-Bass pickups are supposed to be reverse magnetic polarity and reverse wound to be hum cancelling when both are one, but this set have the same magnetic polarity. They both measure the correct length for the neck pickup, so I have 2 neck pickups installed. Will reversing the electrical connection from one pickup give my hum cancelling or am I up for pickup replacement?
The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Just for anyone coming across this, I realised that reverse wiring the old pickups would just lead to an "out of phase" sound that I doubt would be very attractive in a bass. I have put in new fairly modestly priced J bass pickups as a matched set, but have yet to hear how they sound on stage. Theoretically they should be much quieter though.
