Please help with guitar finish
Hi guys.
I'm making my first guitar and loving it. I have a huge problem though, I'm painting a red glitter manson copy but it has three big blisters in it after I sprayed clear on it. I'm using auto acrylic color and clear, is this paint ok and when I strip it and start again?
would shellac be ok as a primer?
and because im spraying clear over glitter it needs to be thick
so can I keep shooting coats every 15 min until the glitter is covered or do I need to stop after so many?
Thanks heaps in advance...

hi welcome to the forum
no this is not ok as you see on the example shown
always test unknown techniques on scrap wood first before you spray it all over your guitar
you really do need to do some looking around and you will find plenty on glitter finish
eg: The Emeraldcaster Project (aka Son of Meloncaster) - Telecaster Guitar Forum
if you read that entire thread you will have a good understanding of the techniques involved
google is your friendray c
dunno what's more fun, buyin' the tools or usin' em'

Thanks Ray.
Yeah I read that one after I spoke to you on the phone, there is so much crap on there, too many people putting in there 5c. Also I'm only putting a few sprinkles on, not covering the whole thing. I will have another read of it see if I can make any sense of it. Now I'm thinking couple coats of Mirotone 3220 as a sealer, sand then a couple of coats of 3220 with red dye to make it opaque. Sprinkle glitter on when wet, let dry then build up clear with 3220.
Any comments weather this is good or bad would be great.
Thanks
Brett...

hehe tbere is banter aplenty but that can be filtered out easily enough
btw there is a forum here that deals specifically with finishing
also one on tdpri
looks to me like the bottom coat was still gassing off when the top coat was shot
15 mins is too short between coats
right now you need to sand it down until you have a level surface all over and start shooting again
rule of thumb is 3 light coats per day no less than 30 - 60 mins apart [when it is touch dry and you can pick it up]
do that for as many days as it takes to get it level
give it a very light scuff with 400 or 600 to promote adhesion
you just can not hurry the process - many many light coats gets the job done - patience is your friend
i am not a great fan of auto acrylic but many use it succesfullyray c

Thanks Ray.
Really appreciate the help. Would you or anyone else know if I can spray a pre cat lacquer or poly ( water or solvent base ) over acrylic paint?
cheers...

Well guys it's all done.
As u can see i ditched the red glitter idea and went with gloss black. Sprayed 3 coats of 3220 with black tint then about 6 or 7 coats of clear. I'm so happy with the way it turned out, who'd know it was my first guitar. The only problem I have now is deciding on the next guitar, I'm hooked. Oh and all the bloody finger prints I have to clean off it...
