First post - seeking maple veneer and a spray colour to match Daphne Blue
Hi all,
I've been enjoying the awesome build threads on this section of your site - thanks for sharing so much detail and information. I have a much more modest project which is going to involve chopping and rebuilding a headstock on a maple/rosewood neck. Once I have achieved the right shape I would like to veneer it before drilling for tuners and refinishing - is there a suitable maple veneer that anyone could recommend? I'm completely new to this so if there's a better place to ask, please just tell me.
For the same project I'd like to finish the instrument in Daphne Blue with a mint pickguard which will need to be a custom shape. Being based in Australia I can't order stuff from ReRanch or anything like that, so I wondered if anyone has had any luck in finding close matches for Fender colours among local paints. I don't have a spray gun or booth, so this will need to be a "rattle can wonder" but I am prepared to work carefully and sand obsessively. I'd love to use a nitro finish, just for the novelty of it, but I'm prepared to be realistic as well.
Also - I am looking for some tuners (vintage Kluson style with slotted ends), some Jaguar pickups, a Mustang tailpiece and the switch/lower control plates from a Jaguar, if anyone wants to sell anything from their parts bin.
I wonder if anyone can guess what I'm trying to build?
Cheers,
Matthew.

For your maple veneer, click on the Tasmanian Tonewoods banner at the top of this forum and get Bob to help you out.

Hi Matthew,
I've finished 6 builds using aerosol can finish. 3 x Nitro and 3 x Acrylic Lacquer. It is hard to find certain colours. Try
The Butcher Shop
this is mainly acrylic lacquer cans, best to check with them which ranges are acrylic, then look at the colours. There are some quite close to Daphne Blue.
There is another company called Voltures Paints (no website). They are the distributors for Belton RAL, Molotow and many other acrylic lacquer can brands, and also have many colours. for example
Art Primo: Belton Molotow Premium[Spray Paint]
All these can bought here.
Just a word about spraying with Acrylic Lacquers cans. You need to allow a fair bit of drying time between coats. and also you'll need to let the body sit for a few months before attaching hardware. I learnt from experience
If you need more info, let me know, I've done a bit of aerosol can research over the past 8 years..... yes it is a bugger sometimes living in Australia.

Thanks for the pointers, I'll give you a call Bob.
Months to attach hardware?? You have no idea how impatient I am. At the moment the neck is still in the mail and I won't know how it all fits together until I receive it.
In case anyone is curious - I am building a cheap approximation of a Fender VI - I've bought a used Jazz Bass body in alder, which I will reshape somewhat, and a 30" scale 20-fret bass neck. By reshaping the bass headstock (cutting out a strip where the tuner holes are, then biscuit or dowel joining to close the gap) I will re-drill for 6 tuners, fit a bridge and pickups to the body, and hope for the best.
The shorter neck means things are a bit crowded on the body, so I will go with a hard tail or a Mustang tremolo, instead of the Jaguar tremolo.
Here's my working diagram:
I'm using this as a taster, to see whether I can step up to more advanced builds in the future.

Hi Guys,
Just to add to the spread of experiences, I too prefer to use Acrylic Lacquer in spray cans. Both for glossy clear coats over stained/coloured or figured timbers and I also use white or black acrylic solid colours when the need arises. I also use Acrylic Primer Putty as a prep coat for solid colours which works brilliantly.
I use automotive acrylic lacquer made by MOTOSPRAY in 400gm cans at about $12.50 a go. Having lashed out on a compressor and gun and nitro and thinners and all the other stuff you need......I just wished I had found this acrylic solution sooner!!! It is so simple, so easy, so convenient and produces an outstanding result.
There is no doubt nitro through a professional rig and more importantly in professional hands produces a glassier finish but I am just not prepared to spend so much time on this difference.....this is glossy and clear enough for me and allows me to finish at a greatly reduced cost. I have very happy customers with it too. And seriously, the amount of time spent on paint mixing, straining, compressor and line setup, moisture valves, and bloody cleanup after EVERY time you use the gun is just incredible......say 15 hours go to whoa with nitro through a rig? Say.....3 hours with cans. And for those that haven't guessed, yes I find painting very very boring!
This acrylic paint dries in MINUTES and allows full hardware fit out after.....ABOUT 3 DAYS!!!!! No problem, no cracking, no nothing, just rock solid good paint .
Just snapped the following pic for you of one I've been working on recently.....denim blue stain on Rock Maple with Acrylic Lacquer clear coats.....ready for hardware and fitout.
Hope this helps.
