the thing i tend to like about these bands (just to name a few) are that they often tend to have different structures and are a bit more experemental with the music.
nomeansno is a canadian trio that has been around for over 20 years. they mix punk with styles such as jazz, blues, metal and funk amongst others. quite a bit of technical playing (bassist and drummer mainly, but the guitarist is pretty good)
king crimson (which im sure a handful of you know) is a progressive rock band that has very skilled musicians (including robert fripp on guitar, who played with g3 temporarily). fripp is a very good guitarist but doesnt take long solos and prefers to not try to take the spotlight in long solos(not that there is anything wrong with that). very good fretwork, but its not made to stand out in the same way as a solo would in hair metal.


this is probably a bit off topic (not that we were on topic) but i typed it out and feel if it isnt posted its wasted time. i feel that all hair metal has going for it is the guitar, and i like it to be more evenly distributed amongst the musicians.

that is true.. without seeming typically young minded, and dont get me wrong i love clapton and all the old school "real" what i like to call music, but i think one reason i liked metallica old school is it seemed to heavly involve alll members of the band, bass, drums, guitar and vocals. wasnt typical singer leads the band and guitar solo and thats it .. in their music bass is very much pronounced and most definately drums too. And i always thought bands should be more like that. but also keeping melodies and harmonies. now im not any pro but i just cant relate to grunge and i cant hear what i define as melodies and harmonies in these songs as i can easily hear in earlier rock genres.. i dunno maybe im being biased.. but anyway. interesting to see everyones thoughts.

For those guys who are still living in the hair metal past, do you realise there is a still a massive and very healthy metal scene in Europe? Every genre of metal oozes from Europe constantly, and there is always new and great stuff coming out that a lot of people here would enjoy I think.

I can name dozens of bands that sound like they are from 1985, but didn't put out an album until 1997. Likewise, there is still a lot of old-school bands still around (damn, Sebastian Bach toured not that long ago, WASP, Iron Maiden, etc).

METAL is still and always will be a very broad and popular genre. You might not see the bands touring, or on the TV or radio, but if you look for it, you will find it!

The metal genres are seemingly endless, and while (for example) 'technical death metal' might not be great to a hair metal fan, its good that it is there because it helps keep a healthy 'metal in general' scene for everyone.

I could go on and on and on about the sub-genres of metal. I'm obviously a big big metal fan, and I listen to everything from unlistenable black metal to hair metal to melodic death metal and all the bits in between (minus the 'nu-metal' which is just hiphop with guitars and blast beats).

If anyone wants some links or a list of bands to check out, PM me... I recommend all hair metalers check out Pink Cream 69 (dodgy band name, great tunes). Also, anyone know Primal Fear? Ralf Scheepers puts Rob Halford to shame!

Oh yeah, killer looking Gunslinger gbx78. Love the blue/purple/green crackle! What does the toggle switch do? Coil tap I assume?

If that's what you like, then you need to do some serious investigation into Rush. For about 10-15 years of their 30+ year history, the guitar intentionally fell into the background so other textures, instruments, and sounds could be explored. Plus, all three members are masters of their multiple-instruments.

I want to say Zeppelin would fall into this as well, but I just can't. It really was a Page/Plant show, with JPJ & Bonzo way in the background, which is unfortunate.

i havent had time or $$ to continue my project (next step is to get pine or practice wood and play with dyes/stains and clears before touching the body) .. is it a problem for my body now in the raw wood state to just sit in the house? i have it semi wrapped in a soft white towel to cover it.. but im worried if its going to react with air over time and change color or something?? beign that im going to stain it i want to maintain what i see as it is right now.. i mean i will sand it properly again when im ready to stain or dye .. thought id ask .. thanks fellow rockers.. hehe

If you are worried give it a lick of shellac, easy to get on and off. I cant really see an issue though raw timber can sit around for years before being sold....

hmm well this is a funny one where im a bit confused. when i had the fretts done ages ago (on my list to learn now) the guy said it was wired in series or parrallel i cant remember and he said you should rewire it in series or parrallel i cant remember but the opposite. Cause currently in the first position is humbucker and in the second it loses output. He said that if u wire it in the other way with a 3 way switch instead of 2 way i could have high output in all positions just with different spilts. I never bothered to investigate any further but i will do one day. Its a Sey. Duncan dimebucker pup. Not really my choice of pup but it came with the guitar and to be honest its just a high output pup and doesnt really pertain any pantera style tone .. but if u use a "metal" pedal you can hear a little bit of that type sound .. but its all good.. came with the guitar and i just use it .. kinda suits the finish and gives the gunslinger that metal yet colorfull look. looks a lot better in person that pic isnt very good and comes across as washed out a bit.

i dont reckon that would be too hard to do

haha u make it sound soooo easy. i was never good at drawing. it'd look too amaturish.

i dont have the graphic persay.. i have a higher res guitar pic with the graphic

A high res pic of the guitar = stencil in about 30 seconds with Adobe Illustrator... you're thinking about it now the seed has been planted

yes .. yes it has!!! thanks alot!!! i have no idea about Adobe illustrator and how i would get a stencil out of it and then even how do i apply that to the guitar to even make it resemble the brunette!! hehe but saying that when i ment hi res pic i mean a pic of a guitar with it on it clearer .. ie the one below. Do you mean print it out and glue it and clear coat it?

or do u mean airbrush it on usuing several stencils (from illustrator) to recreate the image on the guitar.. now that would be cool if i did that myself!!! or i wonder if a vinyl laser cutter could cut most of it out and id paint the rest? omg stop planting seeds into my head, im very vulnerable in my guitarminded state hehehe..

you know ive stopped learning to play now (id say im intermediate with a touch of advanced playing) im more interested in fixing up / refinishing etc.. now .. hehe ..

i reckon i could do it from that pic and i aint no arteest thats for sure
illustrator + half a dozen prints + a good sharp xacto [scalpel] + a cheap airbrush from bunnies + a few sample paint pots from the paint factory + an afternoon or two

more time at bunnings .. i love it!

so what would i need to do in illustrator? extract the graphic? or is there a feature in illustrator that does stencilling or something. i was going to buy a compressor anyway so i guess i can get an airbrush gun/kit too ..

i love the idea of trying this myself. this thread has honestly brought me to new levels of confidence and just the right amount of encouragement to just try things.

the face and hair is all - the rest yiou can easily mark out and mask with tape and paper and spray it in sections

you would need to trace the image with vectors in illustrator
print it out in tile format and assemble it with sticky tape
prolly need a few prints
cut out each colour element with a scalpel
tape onto guitar
spray and remove stencil
ket it dry then comes the next colour / stencil
it looks like that was how it was done originally
that textural effect on the lower bout has been aribrushed in last

time consuming but yeah could be good

this guy does some amazing stuff on his guitars
