Stu, here's a pic of the walnut and the mertyl. I also got some mahogany too, nothing spectacular, but that was real cheap ($10 for 6 decent sheets). The aussie stuff was $18 for 6 (about 150x650 each).

TAS Mertyl
I believe I will take you up on that offer of an up close sticky at your guitars some time soon mate. Just need to sort out my way to the other side of town. Might make a day of it and drop in at Matthews while I'm in the area.
Cheers!

This top came from Gilet's and for the net pics they ran some shellac over the front
for a more realistic representation of the finished look.
Very nice there, Hammered

Update on this baby.
Top bookmatched, glued and clamped for 3 days. Its come out nice and straight.
Top got glued to the body yesterday. Neck joint came up great.
Out of the clamps and sanded today.
The geet has a well diluted coat of white shellac to act as a water repellant
( Tas oak and water don't do good things, and if I can rid myself of having to use oxalic acid on the top, I hopefully have.)
Fretboards right to go on. I'll show pics of that a bit later.
cheers, StuLast edited by oz tradie; 4th November 2007 at 02:03 PM. Reason: one more pic.

Looking good.
How did you route the top to fit with the neck?.

Ta Deano.
I made a 3mm mdf template up. It took all of 10 minutes for the template
Just like making a typical body mortice temp. Very quick indeed.
And this was the overall effect I was after, with the fingerboard flush with the
Tas. Oak carvetop.

It's looking great there stu, but is it just my 'Sunday eyes' or is that guitar looking mighty thick (looks a good 55mm thick in that photo flat on the table)... I love that first shot if the guitar laying on the front, where you can see the neck going right through. I love neck thru's, so sexy
I have the day off work tomorrow, so I'm hoping that I might be able to get down to AFT and grab some timber and get myself started on a real build, but at the moment I'm not sure if I will get there, or if they are even open either. Fingers crossed. I'm gonna try and get a few meters of blackwood.

Wicked job man....a righty!!! Woo Hoo I can have a play on this one
I imagine a fairly aggressive carve may reduce the weight and narrow the edges down on this one? I like the PRS style of FAT in the centre and thin and comfy on the edges. I am also tipping this will have great balance tonally, Blackwood warmth and a bit of brightness from the Vic Ash.......a la mahogany and maple......super stuff, really super stuff ....oh yeah and perhaps just a 'little' sustain thanks to the neck thru design

It's your Sunday eyes, Hammered. Big night on the town ?
15mm carvetop and 34mm body that's chambered.
This is before carving so the sides will look around 40mm thick after carve.
G'day Ethereal
. Yep, I'm expecting you to give this one a severe working over !!!!!
I'll bring her up next Friday to give you a look at.
I'm wanting this one to balance out without too much brightness but enough of a bite.
It's all fun and games 'til it's put together and then see what tonal responses you've coaxed out of the log.
cheers, Stu

I've just begun roughing in for the neck-thru carve.

Here's the headplate and veneers on.
I'm reserving the right to maybe rout a rounded accent similar to the raging fires headplate just to peel back some of those veneers and make them more visible.
We'll see............

Top stuff, seriously. That's the sort of stuff i would of never expected for anything under 5-10 builds (from the builds you see on the net, they don't take the risks until then)
Man, i wish i had the time to do some building (i have my ALS order coming tomorrow...yay!). I should get some done on the weekend, can't wait.

Yeah mate, was our anniversary so got rid of the boy to my sisters place for the night and we stepped out for a nice dinner and a few drinks. Don't really get the chance to go out much anymore, so made the most of it
I figured it would be carved, but that 34mm slab was still looking big to me. I guess 50mm is still thick for a guitar, but once you carve it in would be alright.
Anyway, it's moving along fantastically. I don't know how the hell you find the time to do so much work in such a short amount of time. I managed to get in the shed for a few hours today, and all I was able to turn out was a toilet roll holder, and a headstock template.
The template took me bloody ages. First I cut it all on the inside of the line by stupidity. So I redid it all again, and spent 45 minutes sanding it to perfection, only to find out I don't have a large enough bit to do the keyhole. I'll have to wait until next weekend to finish that. I at least managed to give it a quick run on a scrap of pine and it worked a treat. I made it from 6mm MDF. Next time I will try the 3mm MDF idea first, to make 10mm templates from that. I just had 6mm stuff around.

Templates would be a whole lot more difficult if i didn't have a drum sander (cheapo from bunnings, works well though)
