Page 69 of the latest edition of American Luthier has instructions on making radius blocks using a router. American Luthier is the quarterly journal of the Guild of American luthiers....an organisation well worth joining if youre serious about luthiery.

in martin koch's book there is a tutorial on how to make one my using thin pieces of plywood.
the basic idea is to get some thin pieces of plywood (2-3mm, thinner the better) and eaither rout out a piece of wood, or screw 2 pieces onto the side so they stick up. then you screw a few layers of the thin ply so that they lay across the raised sections and are screwed into the bottom of the chanel. he gives a formula for what radius which depends on the height of the sides (or depth, either way) and the width of the thing.
im planning on trying it for my guitar im about to start (going to get working on the template today). seems like a god idea for a home made one. the more layers you put on the better the arc will be.
if anyone wants i can post the formula given, just ask.

Thanks again for the info.
Hey Stu,that looks pretty easy..Do you use the Safe T planer much?
I have had one on my shopping list for a while but I keep asking myself how often I would use it?
Black Lab,
I found this on Martins (Kosch) site...

This might have to do me this weekend ..

I rigged a pendulum cradle for my router with the centre set a bit less than the radius I wanted. I used the plunge of the router to get the finished radius.
Mount the block under the router and swing the pendulum back and forth, cutting the set radius. Move the block through a little (depending on your bit diameter) and keep it up until you've cut the length block you're after.
I did a little sanding afterwards to get rid of a few ridges and finished up with a pretty good block about 1200mm long.
I used some chipboard for mine, but anything solid should do the job.
Hope this helps
